An October 2001 trip
to Istanbul by Spicer
Quote: When people visit Istanbul, they often confine themselves to the Sultanahmet area, and just visit the main sights there. Of course there's a whole lot more to discover in this fascinating and vibrant city, I've tried to include a few of the places that I particularly enjoyed.
Turkish baths can be fun and they are often situated in beautiful old buildings.
Parts of Istanbul are very liberal, but other neighbourhoods can be quite conservative - scanty attire and public displays of affection are unwelcome - so be aware of this.
The trams in the Sultanahmet area save a lot of walking on hot days.
Turks will mostly agree that the best bus companies are Ulusoy and Varan, who maintain space-age fleets of comfortable buses on all the main routes. They're a little more expensive than the other companies but more comfortable and reckoned to have better time-keeping and service records.
Don't worry if you can't get on one of these buses, most of the other companies, for example Kamil Koc (coach) are pretty good as well.
