Buenos Aires: A City on the Edge

An October 2001 trip to Buenos Aires by travelman

Quote: Buenos Aires is often called "The Paris of South America".The architecture is art deco, streets are as bustling as New York, and a "foodies paradise". For clubs and nightlife, the fun begins at around 11 P.M. The current crisis makes the city a sad place these days.

Overview

Walk the wide 'avenidas'with art-deco architecture; visit the Teatro Colon for a performance; stroll theough La Bocaand Puerto Madero on the Rio de la Plata during the day; visit a piano bar on Corrientes; stroll through the Botanical Gardens; shop at the Galleria Pacificos;take a day trip to Uruguay. Quick Tips: 1. Use credit cards only for security due to the crisis. The USD is now more than double the peso since December. 2.Eat where the locals do on side streets in "take-out/catering" places and you'll save a lot and still have great food. 3.Take the shared van service from Ezeiza airport right to your hotel. Thus was a safe, clean hotel with very pleasant staff though little English spoken. Latinos from other countries of Central and South America stayed here. Excellent location very near two subway lines and entertainment district. Then, with 1USD = 1 peso, it was $40 single: now it would be just $22 USD with the devaluation. Free baggage storage and good security. Art deco exterior but ask for "interior" room to avoid street noise.

Was there twice. Excellent lunch buffet (with service from centre tables)-healthy central European food with some Argentine specialties a la carte. Evenings toward weekends crowded (start serving about 8 p.m.) Great selection and good-sized portions. If paying with dollars, great value. Reminiscent of a fine Paris Bistro. Two hours free parking in underground.

Opera Prima Cafe

Attraction

Quote:
This is a classy vibrant bistro-coffeehouse-artsy bookshop which has live tango/jazz piano music after midnight. It is upstairs in a small cultured plaza between Corrientes and Uruguay(2 blocks from Callao avenue). It attracts a quiet cultured crowd who sit for a while just talking over a drink (bar service as well) in a sophisticated atmosphere. As it is right near main theatres and cinemas, it is a good place to come after a show.

Caminito Pedestrian Street/La Boca District

Attraction | "La Boca - Caminito"

Quote:
The neighbourhood was once the tango centre and all-Italian centre of the city near the Rio de la Plata. It is very colourful and has great photo opportunities. By all means, drop into La Perla Bar-Cafe for a "cortado"(espresso with a bit of steamed milk), the oldest in the city. This is the soul of the city and a reminder of its culture and immigrant roots. During the day it is quite safe to go alone on the #50 bus from Callao.

Buquebus to Uruguay

Attraction

Quote:
An inexpensive way to spend the day in a quaint town across the Rio de la Plata. Large Aliscarfe (hovercraft- pricey) or regular, slower ferry boat for less money. Easy passport control on both sides, no charge for visa on either side. Multiple sailings but more on weekends. A great way to take a break from Buenos Aires. There is a link-up bus to Montevideo from Colonia.
