Experiences in Helsinki

A travel journal to Helsinki by Tuuli

Quote: I'm Finnish, not from Helsinki but a regular visitor in my beloved city. Now I'm sharing my experiences of several trips - I know the city well, but not too well. I haven't got used to it, I never feel bored. But I don't get lost anymore either =)

Overview

Quote:
I haven't seen nearly all the sights in Helsinki. Temppeliaukio church, never been there. Sibelius monument, haven't seen it. I'm Finnish, and even though I've never lived in Helsinki, going on a guided tour would be rather ridiculous, wouldn't it? I've spent my time just walking around and sketching. There are some basic things every visitor should see. The Senate Square is a must - beautiful, historic, popular also among citizens. In the harbor nearby you can see traditional shopping in Finland - and buy souvenirs of course... Esplanadi is the most popular boulevard - or actually it's a small park between two streets - with lots of stylish young people spending time with their friends. ...Read More

Bio Rex

Attraction

Quote:
It was an evening of a sunny, hot summer day. I had been walking around all day by myself - travelling solo of course - and I had decided to spend a few hours watching a movie. In my hometown there's no possibility to see anything but American movies with Tom Cruise and Bruce Willis starring, so now I wanted to take the oppoturnity to see a movie of my style. And the best part of the thing was that I could do it at the coolest movie theatre of Helsinki, at Bio Rex, located in a building called Lasipalatsi - Glass Palace - which is the most respected building of functional style in Helsinki. It dates back to thirties, and had just been renovated. So now it was like new, bright white, bi...Read More

Kiasma Museum of Contemporary Art

Attraction | "Kiasma - the museum of contemporary art"

Quote:
Kiasma is a very new museum - it was opened only a few years ago - and it has been very popular since that. The building is designed by Stephen Holl, and when it was being built, there was a huge quarrel and debate about it in the Finnish media. When people finally saw the result, the building became instantly, highly respected as a fine piece of modern architecture. And it is beautiful, indeed. It has been a year since I visited Kiasma last time. I must admit that I liked it more than when it had just been opened. I'm a big fan of modern art, but I can't say I fancy the art from the 80's - and that's what Kiasma's collections are mostly about. The works of the most famous artists are from past de...Read More

Linnanmäki Amusement Park

Attraction | "Linnanmäki"

Quote:
Linnanmäki is the most visited place for travellers in Helsinki. It's the oldest amusement park in Finland, over hundred years old, and offers all the traditional rides from a monorail to a roller coaster and a carousel. The visitors are mostly families, but also many teenagers spend time there. And it's not unusual for even older travellers or citizens to visit Linnanmäki - especially at night the atmosphere is very charming with all the lights and music. The roller coaster is my absolute favourite. It's old and wooden, which gives a nice 'I hope this thing doesn't crash'-feeling. And the guys taking care of the roller coaster are famous for their great bodies, don't forget to check t...Read More

Heureka Science Center

Attraction

Well, I guess I already told you what's it like Heureka is great for families, as both adults and kids love it. For example, I visited it with my family when my little brother was 4 years old and he liked it very much, I visited it again with a friend when we were 16, and my dad and my uncle (both about 50) visited it last summer and all had a great time. I'd definitely go there with my kids - just to show them that science and history doesn't have to be boring, that knowing stuff is cool, and that there are more exciting things in the world than The Ricki Lake Show. The only negative thing I can think of is the fact that Heureka can't be very extraordinary as there are science centres l...Read More

Cheap Eating

Story/Tip

Quote:
I've rarely really dined in Helsinki. Lack of money is one of the reasons, and that's why I prefer cooking by myself at my friends' or relatives'. That's not possible always, and if you are spending the whole day in the centrum, you can't avoid going to a restaurant. Going to McDonald's, Carrols or Hesburger fast food chains is an option, but I try to avoid them. If I'm looking for a light lunch, Picnic Cafe is one of my favourites. It's a lunch cafe chain, and there are several of them in Helsinki. Their sandwiches and paninis are excellent, especially the one with chicken, and the food is rather cheap. Another rather popular cheapish restaurant chain is Rosso with basic restaurant food and...Read More
