A Baltimore Baby goes Home

A March 2002 trip to Baltimore by flyfan

I was born in Baltimore, but moved away before I knew better. Now I visit whenever I get a chance.

Spend the days at the harbor, soaking up the sun and people watching. At night, catch an O's game if you are lucky enough to be in town for one or visit one of the great clubs. With the kids the Science Center and Aquarium are must sees.

Quick Tips:

Stop by to see the street performers that do their thing in the courtyard between the two harborplace pavilions; they are usually the best entertainment in town.

Best Way To Get Around:

The water taxi is a sure winner when the weather is nice. Also, parking can be a bear, so the light rail is a nice alternative to driving into town. If you are coming from the north (ie, PA) park at Hunt Valley and take the rail. Just be careful, at rush hour it can be a little overwhealming if you're not prepared for it.

Hotel | "Wyndham Inner Harbor"

I love this hotel!

The beds are soft and cozy and the bathrooms well appointed and stocked with Bath & Body works goodies. On our last visit, we had a corner room with windows on 2 of the walls. The view wasn't spectacular- this is not a harbor view property, but then again, you're not paying harbour view prices.

My favorite thing about The Wyndham is Shula's Cigar bar. This place will knock your socks off. Now while it is a cigar bar I've only ever seen 2 gentleman partaking of the pleasure. There are about 2 dozen big leather chairs in groups of 4 with huge ottomans for feet and drinks. There are also sofas and smaller club chairs in both the upper and lower levels. The bar runs along the inside wall of the lower level and the entire outside wall is windows. There is a big screen TV for sports as well as several small TVs throughout the bar. There are two pool tables and, get this, the pool is free! The drinks are a moderate price for the area and the pours are long. We had no problem taking drinks back to our room at the end of the evening.

The staff throughout the hotel is friendly and gracious. Parking is available across the street as you approach the hotel or valet out front. Rates are reasonable but not included.

I highly recommend this property to anyone who doesn't mind walking 5 or so blocks to the waterfront.

Legal SeafoodBest of IgoUgo

Restaurant

Legal is an intimate restaurant with some of the best seafood in Baltimore. (And that's saying something!) You can expect a wait on the weekends, so cozy up to the stylish bar and sample one of the speciality martinis or a local brew while you wait. The menu is mostly standard seafood fare but is prepared and served with an artistic flair. The portions are sizeable and the desserts we sampled were excellent. The wine list was a bit disappointing, but otherwise, a great dining experience. One word of caution. Last time we dined outside on a warm spring day because the temperature inside the restaurant was frightfully warm. Outside was lovely until the sun started to go behind the trees. At that point, the wind started whipping around and the goosebumps ran rampant down my arms. If you eat outside, trust me, take a sweater! Even on a warm day the wind can be brutal.
