The Best of Monterey

Overview

Quote:
Monterey is a world-renowned city, it's fame due in part to the classic works of John Steinbeck. Wander around Cannery Row, visit Fishermen's Wharf, take in the historical sites of Old Monterey. The city is one of 'firsts.' It was California's first capitol city and had the first newspaper, theater, library, post office and real estate transaction in the state. Monterey is a great family place too. The kids will love Dennis the Menace Park, designed by Hank Ketchum, creator of the famous cartoon strip. They'll also enjoy paddle-boating in Lake El Estero, adjacent to the park. Don't forget shopping! There are many specialty shops in Old and New Monterey and on or near Cannery Row.Quick Tips: H...Read More

Casa Munras Garden Hotel

Best Of IgoUgo

Hotel

Quote:
Say no to the same old, same old hotel rooms! The Casa Munras is a historic 3-acre adobe property within walking distance of Old Town Monterey. The property is in a garden setting and reminds me of what Monterey must have been like in its earliest days. There is a nice outdoor heated pool which you'll enjoy if you want to swim or catch some rays. An onsite restaurant and piano bar serves breakfast, lunch and dinner and draws a local crowd. There are other good restaurants within walking distance too.

Fresh Cream

Best Of IgoUgo

Restaurant

Quote:
Dining at Fresh Cream, you'll agree with the critics that it's among the Top 100 restaurants in the nation. The fantastic Bay views and its reputation for celebrated food and service make this the #1 big splurge dining experience in Monterey. You'll find a balanced menu of meat, poultry, seafood and vegetarian entrees. The blackened ahi tuna with its apple rum butter sauce literally melts in your mouth! A tasty salad of locally grown baby greens comes with each entree. Fresh Cream is open for dinner only.

India's Clay Oven

Restaurant

Quote:
If you like authentic Indian cuisine, you'll appreciate this place. They serve both vegetarian and regular food. I love their baingen bharda (eggplant) and tandoor chicken. Go for lunch and try the buffet. It's always a treat because there is so much to choose from. Save room for the kulfi (mango ice cream)! The restaurant is located in downtown Monterey so it's a convenient place to dine after a day of sightseeing.

Sardine Factory

Quote:
This place has the feel of an old time high class brothel with red carpet, red flocked wall paper and four sumptuous dining rooms. Seriously, I don't mean that in a bad way! The Cannery Row Room and the elevated Grill Room and bar are adorned with rich wood, soft leather with photographs, paintings and documents depicting the area's history. The Wine Celler Banquet room is especially fascinating with its 25-foot table and 16th-Century antiques. Speaking of wine, The Sardine Factory has an incredible 30,000 bottle wine list with 1,375 labels. Dining by candlelight near the fireplace in the Captain's room is a glowing experience. I especially like the glass covered Conservatory with its lush greenery an...Read More

It's huge! More than 150 dealers operate out of this two-story, 21,000-square-foot building that was once The Carmel Canning Company Warehouse. Everyday dealers bring in new merchandise ranging from home furnishings to artwork, estate jewelry, toys, books and everything in between. If you love antiques, you will love this place. Plan to spend several hours here because there is so much to see.

The staff is friendly and helpful.

This mostly flat stretch of paved trail follows alongside Monterey Bay for most of its nine-mile length. You'll pass Lovers Point in Pacific Grove, the Aquarium, Cannery Row and Fisherman's Wharf. It's always open and there is no usage fee. Along the way you'll see shore birds, sea lions, and the playful otters. In a word, it's mesmerizing!

Monterey Bay Aquarium

Attraction

Quote:
You've just got to go! Opened in 1984, the Monterey Bay Aquarium is a world-acclaimed, non-profit, self supporting facility. It is home to more than 300,000 sea creatures, representing almost 600 species. There is a 28-foot tall kelp forest in a 335,000-gallon tank. The sea otters are a delight. The fairly new Outer Bay exhibit has a million-gallon tank (the largest in the world), home to huge ocean sunfish, sea turtles, soupfin sharns, barracuda, schools of yellowfin tuna and bonito. Kid's will love the hands-on exhibit of silky-smooth bat rays, starfish and other tiny tide pool creatures in the touch pools. The gift shop is an excellent place to shop for meaningful and educational souvenirs. The Aqu...Read More

Monterey State Historic Park

Attraction | "Monterey State Historical Park"

Quote:
Monterey is rich in history and the 2.8-mile Path of History takes you back in time. You'll see around 40 historic structures all dating back to the 1800s. The 80-minute guided tour visits selected sites, including some that are now private residences. Otherwise you can pick up the 'Path of History' map, available at any of the local visitors centers, and take a self-guided tour. Either way, put on your walking shoes because you'll be taking in most of the downtown section of Old Monterey.
