A travel journal to Richmond by kwest

Richmond is an historic city on I-95 about 2 hours south of Washington, DC. It became capital of Virginia during the Revolutionary War and later served as capital of the Confederacy. The James River flowing through the city provides the only urban whitewater in the US.

The Jefferson is the leading hotel in the area. It is one of a very few AAA Five Diamond properties. The lobbies of the hotel are grand. The rooms are very nice, the service exceptional.

James River RaftingBest of IgoUgo

Attraction

The ride can be exciting but isn't very strenuous. It depends on what time of year and how much water is in the river. During the summer, the river is very rocky. There are nice views of the city.

Pamplin Park & National Museum of the Civil War SoldierBest of IgoUgo

Attraction | "Pamplin Historic Park"

The park is located just to the south of Petersburg off of I-85. It's where Grant's troops punched through General Lee's lines, forcing the evacuation of Petersburg after a nine month siege. Lee surrendered one week later.

The park strives to be the preeminent Civil War experience, and I think they have succeeded. The new Musuem of the Civil War Solider is exceptionally well presented with both video and audio components.

There are also very well preserved earth works, a plantation house and living history activities.

This musuem houses the world's largest collection of Confederate artifacts. The musuem is well-presented and you can also visit the adjacent White House of the Confederacy that served as Jefferson Davis' house throughout the war. This is arguably Richmond's most significant attraction.
