A February 2002 trip
to New York by parramore
Quote: This journal is for all New Yorkers who reach that point where you’re either going to take out a bounty on the head of your noisy upstairs neighbor or take a much needed break from the city. Here are a few places I’ve tried that fit the bill.
We had the Victorian Suite (aptly named for its Victorianesque décor), which comes with a queen bed and an alcove w/daybed and tv. There’s also a cozy fireplace stocked with plenty of wood and a spacious bathroom w/ shower. The innkeepers have thoughtfully placed drinks and snacks at your disposal in the hallway—you just drop money in the jar provided. A hearty breakfast is provided for guests including both hot and cold items. Served at communal table at three different seating times.
For warm weather, there’s a swimming pool in the back with a picnic area. You’ll find soothing views of the Hudson from this scenic spot. Nearby attractions include several historic houses such as the imposing Lyndhurst, a Gothic revival mansion overlooking the Hudson; several wineries; a spectacular dam that claims the title of the second largest hand-hewn structure in the world (next to the Pyramids); and lots of hiking and biking opportunities.
Directions from NYC: Take the West Side Highway to the Henry Hudson North. It becomes the Saw Mill River Parkway. Stay on Saw Mill to exit 25. Turn left onto Rte. 9A North. Stay on 9Afor 7 or 8 miles, then down a long hill and it will join Fte 9 North. Get off 9 at Rte 129. Turn right at the bottom of the ramp. Go a few feet to the light (Riverside Avenue). Make a left onto Riverside. Go 1 block. Turn right on Grand. Go 1 block. Turn left on Hamiltion. Hamilton hits Van Wyck St. at #49, where you’ll find the Alexander Hamilton House.
Note: the rooms range in price from $100 - $150 for the Victorian Suite to up to $250 for the Bridal Chamber which includes a private bath w/ jacuzzi, 5 sky-lights, and other amenities.
