There are train people and there are car people. For me, the fact that I spend my time as a New Yorker being shuttled around at the mercy of cab drivers and subway operators means that there's something thrilling about sliding behind the wheel and doing things at my own pace, on my own whim. New York Rent-a-Car has reasonable rates, I've found. If you're really feeling decadent, rent a convertible and enjoy a scenic summer drive through the Catskills or along the Hudson River. Doesn't get much better than that!

Croton-on-Hudson is one of those charming towns where everything’s pretty much in walking distance and the streets are lined with handsome 19th century homes. The Alexander Hamilton House in Croton is an excellent choice for a quick escape from New York. It’s professionally operated, conveniently located only 45 minutes from downtown Manhattan, and reasonably priced. We had the Victorian Suite (aptly named for its Victorianesque décor), which comes with a queen bed and an alcove w/daybed and tv.
