A travel journal to Lugano by rhiannon1968

Quote: Lugano is my hometown - or more or less. I was born and brought up 7 kilometres south from it... I thought I hated it, I left it for more exciting places, I always came back.

Overview

Quote:
Come to Lugano at night: stroll along the lake and have a look at the mountain in the backdrop... the bay, the mountain overlooking it. Hint: think small but... doesn't it look like Rio de Janeiro? Yes, of course it does. The similarity, however, ends here. I have never been to Brazil, but I expect it to be full of life and colour, lively people and parties... and kaj-pirinhas. We have nothing of the sort yet we don't lack charm, even if slightly more austere. We have mountains and palm-trees right on our doorstep, and endless small charming villages screaming to be discovered. We have mild summers and delicious local red wines... and a lovely lakeside promenade.Quick Tips: Lugano...Read More

Dona Juarra

Restaurant

Quote:
Dona Juarra is right now one of the most popular restaurants for the young hip crowd... so yes, make reservations many days in advance as it's always packed.

The restaurant decor is lovely and very colourful, and Latin American music is played constantly. The food is really delicious: quesadillas, tortillas, fajitas... I'm not sure I saw chili-con-carne though. One of their specialities is a cactus quesadilla - my friends tried it and found it quite tasteful.

Drinking-wise...you simply have to taste their margaritas...they are really to die for.

It's a new entry on the local dining scene... the food is very good - both Sri Lankan and Indian. It's one of those off-the-beaten path restaurants that only locals would find... because it's tucked away in a dark corner far from the centre. I would recommend a taxi to go there. Ok, let's talk food... there's an all-you-can-eat buffet for 39 Swiss francs and Friday and Saturday evening which is really good if you want to taste several dishes. When I last went there I tried some really hot king prawns and a slightly less hot chicken.... then 2 sorts of really good rice (listen to the owner and add coconut mixed with paprika on top of it), 2 different sorts of Indian bread (naan and chapp...Read More

Let‘s start with some general data. Switzerland is a very small country in Central Europe – you have to multiply its area by 328,5 times to have the area of the USA, or by 340 to have the area of Canada. Ok- now let me remind you of the title of this piece -southern Switzerland - and think of how often you have read something about southern Switzerland (or Ticino, as it is called). I mean, my country is so small, how can someone describe a small part of something already tiny? Sounds ridiculous, right? Well, let me inform you that you are wrong. I can and I will. The British-Hungarian satirist George Mikes once wrote in a book called "Switzerland for Beginners" that Switzerland is t...Read More
