Trip in Northern India

Overview

Quote:
Taj Mahal (of course)
Fort of Agra
Baby Taj
Fatehpur Sikri

Quick Tips:

Don't make any visits around noon- the heat is really killing.

Best Way To Get Around:

Don't try to drive yourself. Indian trafic is not logical for Western people. Instead take a tuc-tuc for transport in the city (fast and cheap) or hire a cab for further distances.

This is definitely the site you can't miss. It is wonderfull, in fact, in reality it is still more overwhelming than it is in any movie or picture. Make sure you are early. From 10 AM lots of school buses are dropped at the entry and Indians on a day trip are entering the complex and it gets really crowded. Security is high- you have to pass two check posts before you can enter the central complex. The Taj is a white tomb, raised by Sjah Jahan for his wife. His intention was to build another Taj at the other side of the river in black marble for himself, so they could be together in harmony forever. But his son put him in prison and so he couldn't realize his dream... Captured in the Agra...Read More

Agra Fort

The Agra Fort is very nice, but as we visited it right after the Taj, our mind was still ful of Taj... From the fort, you had a nice view over the river and the Taj Mahal, just like Sjah Jahan could watch when he was locked up in here. The fort has all the predictable elements of an Indian palace: many small palaces, constructed for a different king each time, with a lot of history behind it. The cental court was even more special. It had a covered part with many columns and a wide open garden. The positioning of the columns was made that way that the king could easily spot the people passing by, but he wasn't noticed by those people. Very clever architecture.

Fatehpur Sikri

This ghost town is very special. It was designed by Akbar who wanted to move his capital away from Agra and chose for Fatehpur. He let his architects make plans for the most beautiful city in the world. Which happened. The court moved to Fatehpur, but then they discovered which mistake they had made. Fatehpur is situated in an extremely warm and dry micro-climate which makes that water is often short. The life conditions were unbearable and after twenty years, the king decided to abandon the city completely. And so you can visit the city now as it is left that many years ago. It really is an intact city. You can see the closed structure of the city, and the many palaces an pavillons in it. T...Read More

Some advice: if you go shopping for original souveniers, buy the things you like and try to pay something close to nothing for it. What you pay will turn out to be lost money. We bought a 'real ebony elephant' but as soon as we were at home and rubbed it, the color turned lighter and lighter. Indians are very handy salesmen, and in the end, they always win, even if you think you've brought them to tears.

In Agra you can find the Kohninoor, the most precious jewel in the whole world. If you have the address of the jewel store who keeps it, you can make a visit. It is really wonderful, and you can even try it on for a few seconds ! Moreover, in the same store there is an excellent collection of wall carpets in extremely beatiful colors. This is really Art.
