Among the Mangroves of the Sunderbans, Bangladesh

A March 1999 trip to Khulna by Nogorbaul

A boat trip to Sunderban can be as much a journey within as a sojourn in the wild. There is an unexpected freedom in the impenetrable and forlorn darkness of the sunderban nights.

Some lonely creek bed
Dinghy rides under a full moon. Walks through the rough stubble of mangrove to your personal pilgrimage - some unassuming creek bed - under a merciless mid-day sun. Mud fights and mud baths, soccer matches and river swims. For the adventurous type, a night in the watch tower surrounded by eerie silence pierced only by the shrill cries of nightjars. Birding opportunities. Photographers' dream.

Quick Tips:

Might need mosquito repellent. Don't forget sun hat, sunscreen and mag lite. Good shoes a must. A canteen for water may be advisable for those long walks.

Best Way To Get Around:

Arrange a trip from Dhaka (capital of bangladesh with a tour operator, e.g., Guide Tours). Trip should include passage to and fro, all meals, charge for all activities. The best part - flexibility in a guided tour framework - maximize the fun without the headache. Cost of trip around - for 3-5 days (estimate is dated).
