My favorite thing to do in New York is visit the museums. They are world-class, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the America Museum of Natural History, and the Museum of Modern Art.

A visit would not be complete without a trip to the top of the World Trade Center.

But my highlight of the trip was a visit to the New York Stock Exchange. We witnessed the very moment when it opened.

Quick Tips:

Eat at a deli. Walk through Central Park. Visit Chinatown. Drink your milk.

Best Way To Get Around:

Take the subways and buses. The transit system is very efficient. If you are in a hurry, it's easy to catch a cab, as half of the cars in Manhattan are taxis.

The hotel was two blocks east of Times Square, just off Sixth Avenue. The area was in 'Little Brazil', and pretty safe.

Our room had two double beds. The room was pretty dark, but had a t.v., ironing board, coffeemaker, and a safe.

Free continental breakfast was served downstairs every morning.

For New York City, a pretty good bargain.

There are a few other Howard Johnson's in New York, but this one was in the best location, just one block west of Broadway and the Theatre District. The actual block that the hotel is on is fairly quiet (it can seem deserted at night), but it is only a short distance to the hustle and bustle of midtown Manhattan. Of all the hotels that we've stayed at on our travels, this was the largest room we've ever had. Two queen-sized beds fit easily in the room, which was clean and well-furnished. The lobby seems pretty safe, as there is a security guard by the front door. When we stayed there (1995), we paid about $100 a night. It was a bargain at the time. If the price hasn't i...Read More

We had afternoon tea, which comes with finger sandwiches for $29 a person. This was our most expensive meal of the trip, even if it wasn't really a meal. However, it was a memorable location, in one of the classiest hotels in the city. Have tea and linger for a few hours, you won't regret it.

Huuuuuuuuuuge sandwiches! Although it costs an extra $2 to share a sandwich, this is highly recommended, as only a cougar could finish a Carnegie Deli sandwich in one sitting. The corned beef sandwich is unbelievable.
