You may be surprised to learn that there are plenty of activities to keep you occupied in the Scranton area, many of them celebrating the great outdoors. Here are a few highlights: * Steamtown USA This national historic site celebrates the history of steam locomotives. Great for train enthusiasts of all agesl, and kids love it! You can look around the museum or take a two hour/26 mile round trip excursion. * Lackawanna Coal Mine Another great site for families. You can take a ride down into an actual anthracite coal mine still mined into the mid-1...Read More

Ryah House

Restaurant

Quote:
The Ryah House is a Northeastern Pennsylvania institution. This restaurant recently changed ownership and the changes, so far as I can tell, have been overwhemingly positive. Always a wonderful establishment for fine dining, the decor changes have made the restaurant more modern and airy. The updated menu is fresh and has some offerings that will certainly be considered daring in this somewhat conservative area.

On my last visit, I enjoyed a lamb entree and my party shared several fantastic desserts.

Old Forge, the town next to my hometown of Taylor, is a historically Italian area and that is reflected in the cuisine. Although there are plenty of upscale restaurants in Northeastern Pennsylvania, you can't underestimate the value of a good quality pizza. In Old Forge, you will find so many sit-down pizza (and more) establishments to choose from. A few of my favorites are: Salerno's - Just off Main on Moosic Road Their red pizza comes on a crust like none I've seen elsewhere. Doughy, but not thick like, say, Pizza Hut. Not too saucy. Just the right amount of cheese. Yum. And it's cheap too. You can get six cuts for less than $7. Dine-in too. Interesting bar ...Read More

Montage Mountain Ski

Attraction | "Montage Mountain Ski Resort"

Quote:
Montage opened in approximately 1982 or 1983 when I was about 10 years old, growing up in Taylor, PA. I was so excited for the opportunity to learn to ski just ten minutes from home. Over the years, Montage has made great efforts to improve the terrain and provide more challenging trails for expert skiers. To that end, they added the "North Face" in the late 80s that has, I believe, four trails which are black diamond and double black diamond. This is a great "learn to ski" mountain and I know plenty of expert skiers who are happy to have a decent mountain nearby. The biggest challenge, so far as I can tell, is keeping snow on the mountain. The weather has not always cooperated dur...Read More

Scranton Cultural Center At the Masonic Temple

Attraction | "Scranton Cultural Center"

Quote:
The Scranton Cultural Center is a downtown landmark. Recently refurbished, it plays host to a variety of artistic events ranging from live musical performances to touring off-Broadway shows to shows created and performed by local artistic companies.

Local icon Jason Miller passed away last year. His funeral was held here in Scranton and attended by such noted artists as Martin Sheen and Malachy McCourt.

McCourt has ties to the area and in the late Spring, he will perform once again at the SCC and also at the Kirby Center in nearby Wilkes Barre, PA. Schedules for upcoming events are posted at www.scrantonculturalcenter.org.

Raintree

Attraction

Finding Raintree during a visit home to Scranton was such a revelation. In the past, I had complained that there was nowhere special to shop in the area; everything was Gap this or a boring department store. I saved my shopping for the NYC area or trips to Philadelphia's large more-upscale malls. But Raintree is something special in downtown Scranton. Labels that were never available in the area can now be found and with huge variety. I have no idea how the owner of Raintree can keep so much merchandise in stock. The place is huge! I like that Raintree doesn't only go for the most obvious designers... there's a ton of variety. Another exciting aspect of Raintree is the small foot...Read More

Attraction | "Montage Mountain Amphitheater"

Quote:
Montage Mountain puts on a top-notch concert series each year at its outdoor amphitheater. You can see top acts here - Rock, Country, nostalgia tours, you name it. During Summer 2002, acts as diverse as Alicia Keys, Usher, Kenny Rogers, Creed and Aaron Carter will appear. The first concert I saw at Montage was Lollapalooza II, featuring Pearl Jam and the Red Hot Chili Peppers, among other great acts. I was 19 and home from college for the summer and I remember feeling so excited to see my small hometown lure a top tour to the area. Provided the weather is nice, Montage Mountain is a great place to take in both a musical performance as well as some amazing natural beauty. Montage is...Read More
