Quote: I finally made my first trip to Vegas during Labor Day Weekend in 2001. What a blast! I can't wait to return. I stayed two nights in the Luxor and one night at the Hard Rock. Very different scenes, each with their own appeal. If you like my journals, rate me! If you have other feedback, shoot me an e-mail.

Having never visited Vegas at the ripe old age of 27, I felt like a big loser. The Vegas trip has seemingly become an American rite of passage and somehow, I had missed out. When I finally got the opportunity to go for a weekend with my best friend, I said to myself "it's about time" and I prepped for some full-on debauchery. I wasn't disappointed. Highlights of the trip included flying into Vegas at night and catching an amazing view of the Strip... dinner at Nobu... gambling at the Hard Rock feeling like a high roller, even at a table... roasting in the Vegas sun as we sat by the pool... hopping on a party bus with random people celebrating some guy's birthday... seeing Dennis Rodman emcee a ...Read More

Luxor Las Vegas

Hotel | "Luxor"

The Luxor is, to this 20something, very old school in spite of being a modern hotel. Everything about it is dark (to make you not care whether it's night or day in the real world) and confusing (no matter which direction you turn, it leads back to the casino, somehow). The darkness was most evident in the rooms. Our room was in the pyramid. With the odd sloping inward window, it was hard to actually take in the Vegas skyline. All of the furniture, extending the Egyptian theme, was dark and very large. Even though it was clean and otherwise pleasant, the darkness made my friend and me want to run outdoors! The effect of the pyramid construction is also evident each time yo...Read More

Hard Rock Hotel And Casino

You should consider the Hard Rock Hotel from an accomodations perspective in conjunction with my review of the casino action. The HRH breaks lots and lots of Vegas rules and thank goodness for that. Like everywhere else, all roads lead to the casino, however it's not as overwhelming as some of the old-school hotel/casinos are. There's actually some light from outside that manages to seep into the HRH during the day. The rooms further distance the HRH from other Vegas establishments. You're frequently reminded that you're in a hotel that's geared toward music - the hallway lighting fixtures are actually Zildjian cymbals - but's it a cool, not-stuffed-down-your-throat way. Our room...Read More

Nobu

Restaurant

Although the Vegas Nobu does not offer the full-on experience you'd get in NYC, this is still a top-notch Japanese restaurant. As if I needed to say "Japanese" when Nobu has become synonymous with quality sushi and sashimi Sushi and sashimi are obviously the main draw, however landlubbers will not be disappointed as there are appetizers, entrees and specials suited to these tastes. We started our meal with the freshest, most delicious edamame I've ever tasted. To the uninitiated, edamame are Japanese soybeans served (usually) in the pod and salted. You half-suck/half-squeeze the two or three little green beans out of the pod using your fingers and lips, discarding the pod. They s...Read More

Border Grill

Restaurant

In Los Angeles, Border Grill of Santa Monica is one of my favorite restaurants so I was excited to try the Border Grill of Las Vegas during my visit in August 2001. The food is similarly enjoyable although there are some differences to the eclectic Latin menu. Drinks are just as festive and delicious. Food is delicious, however the atmosphere is totaly different and I think it colored our overall impression of the Vegas outlet. The level on which you enter is small and disjointed. Most diners will eat down one level. We sat outdoors cooling off from the August swelter with their misting stations. Again, the food was good, but the atmosphere was off. It just felt too secl...Read More

Hard Rock Hotel & Casino

Attraction | "Hard Rock Hotel and Casino"

If you are young, single and looking to party, there is no better place than the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino. It's social - big time. This is not your Grandma's casino. I'm not saying you'll be uncomfortable if you're NOT young or single, but if you are, definitely spend some time here.

I particularly enjoyed playing blackjack at Hard Rock, but even if you're just there for the scene (not the gambling), you'll have fun. The music was loud

The only downside? It's off the Strip so you'll need a cab to get there. Cab lines to go elsewhere tend to be long so allow sufficient time to get from here to there.
