Coping with Medan

A June 2000 trip to Medan by erasmus

Medan, the biggest city on Sumatra, is where you are likely to get your first encounter with the island. It must be said that the impression it leaves is less than perfect: Noisy, polluted, confusing and a remarkable lack of interesting attractions. But you can have a tolerable stay here.

The best thing to do in the city is to go see the Mesjid Raya and the Maimoon Sultan palace. These are the only truly captivating sights in a city that should be endowed with at least some historical monuments because of its long history. Luckily, the two lie within 300 m of each other. Staying at the guesthouse directly opposite the mosque (Zakia Guesthouse) is a fine way to get the most of what atmosphere the city has to offer.

Quick Tips:

My most important piece of advice on Medan is: Don't let the place get to you and ruin the expectations of seeing beautiful rural Sumatra. Big Indonesian cities are just not charming places!

Best Way To Get Around:

Every conceivable mode of transportation are available in Medan. The distances are quite overwhelming, but then again there are not many sights worth an excursion. Beware of taxi ripoffs, and do try the trishaws.
