Roadtrip around the Southwest

A January 2002 trip to Las Vegas by diverk

My friend and I hopped into an old, pretty dirty jeep and made it older and dirtier, but gave it character, history and charm. Driving through the long deserted roads of the Southwest, hiking the Grand Canyon and the mountains, and driving through Route 66, especially after re-reading The Grapes of Wrath, was magical and contemplative. And nothing compares to spicy Southwestern cuisine.

The Grand Canyon, Hopi reservations, Sedona, Santa Fe, Breckinridge, and Las Vegas.

Quick Tips:

No matter what anybody tells you, bring a pair of crampons with you when hiking down the Grand Canyon in the winter. We, of course, made the error of not bringing them, and then it snowed at the bottom of the Canyon. Also, if you're not a rich person, every motel room that we stayed at was amenable to a little bargaining. Lastly, eat a lot, because the food is cheap, tasty and spicy.

Best Way To Get Around:

You need a car.
