Backpackers Inn is reasonable place to stay in Selcuk. I was sleeping on the roof of the hostel for 5 USD per night and it was a good price.

The hostel by itself is nothing special, but clean and calm with billiard bar and internet cafe.

As I said in the entry about the history of Selcuk and the Mariam Anne house, this is the place where Virgin Maria spent her last days. It is situated in the mountains about 2 hours' walk from Selcuk. But it is worth every minute of that pilgrimage. I am not a religious man, but I felt something strange when I was there. It was the first time I prayed. I know it seems a little bit crazy but the place has a very impressive atmosphere. I liked it. It was a very good resting place after the long journey around Turkey.

In Selcuk is located the cathedral of St. John, who was mentioned in entry about the history of the Virgin's house. It used to be a huge cathedral. The only problem with building this temple was, that the hill on which it stays was a little bit small to build such a big building. However, it is quite imposing.

It is a very good place to spend a few hours by hanging around the columns and lying in the grass and enjoying the sun.

Do you remember? The Temple of Artemis was one of the seven wonders of the world. And how does it seem today? Look at the photos and you'll see one column in the fields. This column is everything that remains of that famous building.

Story/Tip

I will say the story in the way I read it in Mariam Anne house near Selcuk. When Jesus Christ, the son of God, was dying on his cross on the mountain of Golgota he asked John the evangelist to bring his mother Virgin Maria away from Israel and guard her. So John took Maria to Ephesus. And there in the mountains near Ephesus he built a house for her and there she lived for eleven years till her death. Around her grew a small community of Christians. After her death these people did not convert to any other religion or belief so a small community of Christians lived in the place for many centuries. But the house of Virgin Maria was forgotten for a long time. Till the 20th century. ...Read More
