I had always dreamed of visiting New York City. I wanted to be, and still hope to be, one of those poeple who visit annually. After this experience, I certainly understand the motivation. Sleep was an inconvenience -- there was just so much to do and see! And I hardly scratched the surface.
I have visited many of America's big cities and yet nothing compared to this. I was in awe the entire time I was there. Just walking down the street was a highlight of my trip. I could have walked for miles and probably did.
The shopping is fantastic, even if you're not especially into that. When you visit New York, you must go home with a least one great purchase. Members of our group had clear views about whether to see "Ground Zero" or not. Half could not be in New York without going there and the other half could not go there at all. I had to go. And while I thought I was prepared for what I would feel, I was not. It was a powerful experience.
Quick Tips:
Wear comfortable shoes!! I only brought boots and my feet have never hurt so badly. That did not stop me from walking. I did not want to miss a thing!
Also, bring lots of cash. Whatever you think you will need -- double it.
It helped to have a great guide too. An old friend lives in NYC and he could not have been more helpful to us. You know who you are!
Best Way To Get Around:
Getting around was a lot easier than I thought -- walking is wonderful, cabs were pretty easy to get (though you cannot put more than four in a cab and that was a pain because there were often five of us)and the subway was just something you have to do at least once.
