A White Mountain Weekend

Overview

Bethlehem is a quaint New England town in northern New Hampshire, about 3 hours north of Boston. Hiking and skiing are big activities here, since it's close to many major slopes. Both Cannon Mountain and Bretton Woods are within a 30-minute drive. More up my alley, since I am not a skier, is the White Mountains Trail, which you can hook up with nearby on Route 302 in Twin Mountain. The White Mountains have been long known for natural splendor, cultural richness, historical charm and stimulating recreation. The White Mountains Trail encompasses all these aspects along a 100 mile route that one can drive in less than...Read More

Oh, boy. I thought my friends were going to kill me. My friends and I occasionally get together for weekends in a rented cabin. We pitch in for groceries, eat big dinners and spend time together. The place we usually stay was booked, so I found Baker Brook Cabins on the internet and I thought it looked OK. It had everything we were looking for: two available cabins with two bedrooms each, equipped kitchens and fireplaces. Well, it looked as if neither of the cabins had been cleaned for many moons. The cabin Boyphoenix and I shared with another couple (ironically named the Cherry) had this treacherous spiral staircase in the living...Read More

White Mountain Bagel Co

Restaurant | "White Mountain Bagel Company"

Open year round for breakfast and lunch, the Bagel Company offers fresh bagels, cappuccino, lunch sandwiches & quaint New England Charm.

There are a few tables indoors, and a few picnic benches outside, which were covered with a foot of snow during our visit. We each ordered bagel sandwiches and a cup of chicken soup. Service was quick and friendly. The food was fresh and delicious, and you'll escape without spending more than $10 for lunch.

Four Seasons Trail

After a weekend of sitting around and eating, the group of us needed some fresh mountain air. An antiques dealer told us about the Four Seasons. Just off Route 302 in the center of town, it came recommended for its ease and relatively short trails.

You can walk the whole loop or select a shorter route, which is what we did. Taking less than an hour, it was a beautiful and invigorating walk. I highly recommend this short trek through nature for beginning hikers or those with children who don't have the stamina (or attention span) for long, difficult trails.

Frugal Yankee

Attraction

I don't own any ski gear. I don't own a ski jacket, snow pants or heat packs for gloves. I don't own any mirrored wrap-around sunglasses. But I tell you what, if I were in the market for such things, The Frugal Yankee is where I'd pick them up. I stopped in before heading to the grocery store and was amazed at how inexpensive things were, compared to Lahoots across the street. For example, Frugal's snow pants sell from $20 - 30, whereas Lahoots is twice that. Besides the winter play clothes, the Frugal Yankee stocks brand-name clothing for men, women and chilren at reasonable prices - something that can be hard to find in a "resort" town. I can't vouch for the quality, however, so don't ...Read More
