Check out the outskirts - the lakes Mulshi, Panshet, Khadakvasla, Pashan. The Sinhagad Fort, Lonavala and Khandala hill stations. There is Kaivalayadham nearby and Igatpuri's Vipassana centre. Go to nature Cure centre.

Apart from this, it has excellent restaurants, great theatre, classical music performances twice or three times a week. Plenty to do. Pune University is nice. So is the Bhandarkar Oriental Research Institute.

Quick Tips:

Stay on and sink into the place - give yourself six months and undertake to learn something of Indian culture. It is in many ways the best of the east and the west, so living and learning are both possible - it is the Oxford of the east and also the cultural capital of Maharashtra.

Best Way To Get Around:

Autos or rent a scooter.

Hotel ShreyasBest of IgoUgo

Restaurant

This is a very nice restaurant which has made its name for some very tasty and very high quality vegetarian food. Recommended as an introduction to the newbie to Indian food being moderately spiced, it also appeals to the connoiseur for its fine cooking. Quiet, understated excellence is the dominant theme of this restaurant.

This is a two or three day classical Indian music and dance festival. It is fantastic - you get anything from five to seven performances of the finest musicians of India. Started by Pandit Bhimsen Joshi, in 2001 it was in its 49th year and it is a landmark festival in the country's music calendar. Everyone takes leave in advance to attend this festival - late night endings do not allow one to go to office next day!! The biggies of Indian classical music are present here every year, but more importantly, the new talent that is discovered here and nurtured continues in the fine tradition of the senior musicians encouraging the juniors. The audience is very knowledgeable and many a star was born here. All this for as low as 150 Indian rupees (US $ 3)for three days!!

The best that India has to offer is usually available at a very low cost.

Attraction | "Raja Kelkar Museum"

A peep into history and one man's passion as he collected hundreds of everyday objects from all parts of the country and put them up for us to observe a passage of time as to how various objects from the mundane lock (hundred varieties) to the more eclectic musical instruments evolved over the years.

Khadakwasla LakeBest of IgoUgo

Attraction

It is a fabulous lake and a favorite picnic spot for many in the city. Crowded on weekends, it is best visited on weekdays and if you go to the shore side that is away from the main sinhagad road (below the dam and then to the left as you come up) it is quiet bliss as you swim and sunbathe in peace with only the cows to disturb you occasionally.
