Quote: Les Trois Vallee is perhaps the largest ski area in the world. It is actually a combination of many ski areas in three general valleys (hence the name). The valleys, Val Thorens, Meribel and Courcheval are themselves divided into small villages, each with their own set of lifts.

When you head for the lifts you are immediately struck with the massive size of this resort. There are more than 167 lifts, many of which are gondolas and trams. It takes about 3.5 hours to ski from one end of the resort to the other. The food is out of this worls, with most of the best restaurants in Courcheval 1850 (refering to the altitude, 1850 meters above sea level).Quick Tips: If you are with a group you might want to consider Meribel or Val Thorens (the other two valleys) for chalet life with your own cook for three meals a day. If you want restaurants, Courcheval 1850 is a must. Fly into Geneva and take the bus. Instructions for the bus are below. None of these resorts has a bu...Read More

THe unit was a one bedroom spartan apartment with two single beds in the bedroom and a sleep-on couch and pull out single bed in the living room. They say it is for four but two was just right. It is located in the Forum building which contains the grocery store, bowling alley, spa, climbing wall, ice skating rink, pastry shop, liquor store and numerous shops. The staff speaks some English and all were helpfull. The best feature is that these apartments are directly across the street from the ski lifts. You could not find a more convenient location. It is also close to the bus station. This is very important if you take the bus from Geneva, since you will be carrying you luggage from the bus st...Read More

A doorman opens the door from the cold dark street to a warm inviting interior. The smells of the kitchen immediately intice you to want to take your table The coat check woman and the waitresses are all dressed in tight black pants and black tops. ( It is obvious that they do not hire based on resume alone!) The tables and chairs seem to have come from an antique French Chateau. In one corner sits a massive fireplace with two chairs inside the firebox. (see photos). My meal began with Potage de Raviolis aux Fines Herbes et Caviar de Tomates (Ravioli Soup with herbs and tomato caviar, 18 euros) The next course was Lotte Pique au Peperoni, sur Coulis de Legumes Frais en Huile d'Olive et Herbes Frai...Read More

As you walk in there is a low bar directly in front of you, a cocktail area to the right and a comfortable candle lit dining area to the right. The piano player was singing Sinatra in French and the mood was right. Unfortunately I was with my friend Richie (or as he wanted to be known while in France, Riccardo). I started with a Noix de Saint-Jacques en coque (scallops 20 euros) Dinner was a tasty Filet de boef aux girolles sur sa ratatouille (43 euros). I don't remember the wine but it was fantastic all week. You always had a choice of local Savoyard wines or those from elsewhere in France. After dinner an old friend stopped by for a drink. Earlier in the day while checking my...Read More

As you step in from the street a British woman in tight black pants and top greets you and takes your coat. The bartender to your right is similarily attired. Several men sit at the bar intently studying her ample cleavage. As the waitress/hostess nudges you with a menu you feel yourself coming out a trance and follow her into a dining room. As you walk to your table you realize that the "hungry" men are at the bar and the real people in the dining room. At each table is a Candelabra holding five long tapers. The subtle light of the Candles made the walls seem to sparkle and dance. For my appetizer (called an Entree in France) I had Saumon sauvage cuit a la nage, puis refroidi, emulsion d'huille d'...Read More

As I said in the introduction, this ski area is massive. I mean it makes Whistler or Vail seem like each is a small "town slope" from 1960. There are at least 167 lifts and most are trams, gondolas or high speed quads or sixes. Les Trois Vallee (French for The Three Valleys) consists of Courcheval, Meribel and Val Thorens. Each has numerous villages whose lifts have been combined under a single lift ticket covering all three valleys. Rentals: I was surprised to see that almost everyone was renting their equipment. The rental equipment ranged from typical American type rental equipment to the very high end. Many skiers were on brand new Salomon Croos Max Pilot 10 skis. Check t...Read More

Getting there

Story/Tip

The closest major airport is Geneva. You could easily rent a car at the airport and drive, but you will not need a car while you are in the resort, and you will have to pay to park it. Bus service runs almost every hour from the Geneva airport. Pass out of the baggage claim area to the counters by the door. The bus desk, called the Gare Routiere, is to the right of the door next to Hertz. Buy your ticket, actually two tickets. The first stop is Moutiers where you change buses for Courcheval. To get to the bus, pass out the door to the left of the ticket counter and walk straight out past the pick up area to the line of busses. Look for one with Moutiers in the front window. By the way, yo...Read More

Most restaurants require reservations. You can usually make them the day before. If you go to a restaurant before 9 p.m., you'll find yourself alone. No one dines before 9 and the restaurants don't really fill up until 9:30 or 10:00. I used the word 'dine' earlier because that is what the French do. This is not fast food. You may sit around for a half hour with your drink (called an apperatif) before you even get the menu. The food is then brought to you in a leisurely fashion. You will find that most of the tables are occupied by smokers. This is perhaps the most annoying thing about France ---- everyone smokes. After dinner few people will ask for the check until 20 or 30 minutes after th...Read More
