Overview

A Bar With A View
The best time to go to Langkawi is now. There is a lot of development planned in the near future, and I fear what this may do to my favourite holiday destination. The beaches are fantastic and the views are worthy of travel brochures.

I stayed at Pentai Tengai, in the Aseania. It's near a west-facing beach (do not ever miss a sunset). There are many cheap places along this stretch of coast, and off-season (it's always hot and sunny) shouldn't be too difficult to find somewhere.

The Crocodile farm is worth a visit, and so is Tanjung Rhu in the north east of the island. Great wildife trips depart from there and there aregreat views too. Not only that but there's a very deserted beach too. Go to the night market a Kuah and sample many a local exotic delicacy.

For the petrolheads, there is a kart track near the airport. Then there's the seven wells, an idyllic waterfall. But for sitting on the beach, there can be fewer better places. Turn up the heat and chill!

Quick Tips:

In the morning have Roti Canai for breakfast. It's a scrummy fried bread, and comes with some curry for dipping. You can get it with banana or with egg. For lunchtime eat lightly, but don't forget the sunblock.

It is very hot, very sunny. Get some waterproof sandals because you won't be able to walk on the sand. And there are jellyfish that sting.

At night go to Kuah night market, and then visit the Hawker stands near the taxi rank.

Food is great and cheap. Eat locally, and get out of the hotel. Food there is usually not so good, and western prices are charged.

Kuah shops although duty free are not always cheap.

Best Way To Get Around:

Taxis are cheap and plentiful. Hire a car for a few ringits more and explore at leisure. There are many car hire places, but remember to bargain. Cash goes a long way. Flying to Langkawi from KL is only about 200 Ringits. You will need air con in the car. You will regret a car with no roof, for all the pose value.

Restaurant

Outside hawker stands are a feature of SE Asia. At this place you can have most anything you want. Thai, Malay, Chinese..the lot.

When you get a prawn curry they ask how many prawns you want! We went out and had two types of prawn curries and about 50 satay sticks and loads of soft drinks, and it came to 30 ringits for four people. This equals about 3 GBP each.

It's the only way to eat. Make your selection from any of the stalls (don't worry they will find you) and sit down and enjoy!
