Dining near ORD (O'Hare Airport)

A January 2002 trip to Chicago by Laura

Quote: I work near O'Hare Airport and often dine out for lunch.

Dining near ORD (O'Hare Airport)

Overview

Quote:
The area around O'Hare is filled with hotels and restaurants. Here are some of the ones I know which can be helpful for folks in town for a convention at the Rosemont Convention Center or at one of the area hotels.

Quick Tips:

I think Des Plaines is the most central location for the Chicagoland area. Major highways are accessible and it is the center of the close-by suburbs.

Best Way To Get Around:

Car or taxi. The El Blue Line is also nearby.

Pazzo's Cucina Italiana Pizza & Pasta Kitchen

Restaurant | "Pazzo's Cucina Italiana"

Pazzo's is a little pricey for lunch, but I like to go there for a special occasion at the office. It was about $25 per person last time I went ($180 for 7 or us), a few ordered salads and desserts along with a pasta entree. My coworkers rave about the lobster ravioli for $15.95. I liked my striped ravioli in a green pepper cream sauce. The desserts are very good and very large. I like the classic tiramisu. The minnestrone, I can pass on. It was bland and nothing great. They have individual wood fired pizzas too. Pazzo's takes reservations and if the group is large enough, like 8 or so, they give you a private room which is very nice. The restaurant is off of Higgins tucked away at the...Read More

This is the last of the old drive-ins with a "car hop" server. Don't expect to dine in. You eat in your car or at a picnic table in the summer time. Each Superdog, Superburger or Supercheesy (a cheese burger) comes nestled in its own bed of fries with a pickle and pickled green tomato. The shakes and malts are yummy too. I like the vanilla the best. It is a fun place and is open daily for lunch, dinner and late night. It is also very close to the end/start of the Chicago Forest Preserve bike trail so you could pig out then burn off the calories with a long bike ride. The relish is a unnatural shade of green, but delicious and mild.

Blue Wave Restaurant

Restaurant | "Blue Waves"

Quote:
This is one of those classic diner places with a Greek flare that you find all over the Chicago area. I like the corned beef sandwich. I have tried the lunch prime rib special for $9.95 served with soup or salad, roll, choice of potato or rice and a vegetable. It was a lot for the money, but the meat was not that great. It is an inexpensive basic lunch place with sandwiches, omelettes and lots of daily specials. The service is good.

This is one of my favorite lunch places. It is one of those old school "business man" kind of lunch places - a good spot to take clients or business associates. It specializes in steaks and seafood. For lunch I like the London broil. It comes with soup or salad. The French onion soup is a good choice. I have also enjoyed the beef shish kebab served with rice. There are daily specials, if you catch it, the carpaccio salad with goat cheese and a balsamic dressing is nice and not as heavy as some other choices. My frequent lunch-mate enjoys the grilled meatloaf sandwich served with steak fries probably due to the sheer quantity of food on the plate. There is also a crabcake sandwich that a client liked....Read More

This little downtown Des Plaines diner across from the Metra stop has been family-owned 1921. Breakfast is served all day and includes big, fluffy omelettes served with toast and potatoes. My friend likes to get the Gypsy skillet with potatoes, eggs, cheese and bacon. There is a Greek flair to the lunch and dinner menu with daily specials that include soup or salad and a roll. The chicken breast stuffed with spinach and feta is tasty. Chicken soup tends to be heavy on the soggy noodles. The meatloaf will leave you with some nasty garlic breath. It's a bit of a throwback to the 50s or 60s, but service is friendly and it is a good lunch spot during the week. There is limited parking in front or a larg...Read More

Located a stone's throw from O'Hare Airport, this is the proverbial "business man's lunch" type of place. Business attire is appropriate and the waiters are very professional dressed in suitcoats. I have only gone for a couple lunches as holiday celebrations from the office. The dinner menu is similar. I enjoyed the tournedos of beef tenderloin (6 oz) and others in my party really enjoyed the veal picatta and the crab salad. Each entrée came with a Caesar or house salad, scalloped potatoes and vegetable of the day. It was broccoli with tomato pieces with some seasoning that I did not like - maybe garlic. The dessert selection does not appear to change over time and includes lemon mousse cake, flourle...Read More

This family-owned Chicago restaurant has been around for more than 50 years. It seems every neighborhood has one and the downtown Des Plaines is one of the newer ones. They serve moderately priced Italian and American food. This is a good place to take a picky eater. The menu is HUGE with Italian favorites like mix and match pastas and sauces, chicken dishes etc. The bbq ribs are average at best, but will fix a craving. You can get beef sandwiches, grilled vegetables and more. The minestrone soup is very good with crunchy veggies and a tomato base and the psychedelic salad is terrific - a beautiful display of lettuce, carrots, green peppers, tomatoes, etc. and comes with sun flower seeds. The house It...Read More

Harry Caray's

Restaurant | "HARRY CARAY'S RESTAURANT"

Quote:
This Harry Caray's restaurant is located in the Holiday Inn Hotel in Rosemont. The more famous location is downtown at Kinzie and State. I had a really great Italian mixed salad with fresh mozzarella, pepperoccinis, kalamata olives, roasted red peppers, romaine lettuce and a balsalmic dressing. I dreamed about how good the salad was. Until I woke up at 1:30 a.m. with FOOD POISONING! And so did my colleague who also ate the salad. She called to tell the restaurant manager and the manager said, "well that happens sometimes." I have never been so sick in my life. The service that day was a little slow. We had a party of ten people though. Others in our group did enjoy their pasta and chicken dish...Read More

Carlucci Restaurant

Restaurant

Quote:
Carlucci's is a pretty fancy Italian place for lunch or dinner. Depending on what you get, you could stink like garlic the next day if you are not careful. Once, we sent committee meeting attendees there for dinner and our board room reeked of garlic the next day during the meeting. Everyone was just oozing.

Anyway, I have been there for a client lunch meeting. They have a lot of fresh fish choices and daily specials. I had a pasta with prociutto and peas in a cream sauce. The prociutto was not cut fine enough for my taste. My colleague has the salmon special with capers in a wine sauce and she liked it a lot.

They have valet parking.

Rosewood Restaurant & Banquets

I have been to the Rosewood for several office dinners and banquet events. I have had the prime rib which is about an inch thick and on the bone served with a collosal twice baked potato. I have also had "Jimmy's double cut pork chop" It was like a mini pork roast on my plate! The last time I was there, I ordered the chicken breast with with wild mushrooms and marsala sauce over wild rice. It was very good and large too. For desserts, the apple purse is more like an apple breifcase! I love the white chocolate mousse cake with raspberry sauce and always regret not ordering that when I try something new. Last time I had the blueberry tart. It was nice, but no mousse cake! Rosewood Restaurant i...Read More

This is a great lunch spot with specials at about $6.95 each including tea, soup, egg roll, rice and an entree. My favorites include the sweet and sour chicken and the governor's chicken - a spicier version of the sweet and sour. Both are battered and fried pieces of white meat in a great sweet sauce. I have also enjoyed the beef lo mein - soft noodles with beef and veggies, but found it a little bland being on a hot food kick. For three of us it was $28 including tip and tax. The service is fast so you can get out of there if under one hour for sure. I have never been there for dinner so I can not comment on that.

Brandy's is a fast food restaurant with a Greek flair. You order at the counter and wait for your nember to be called. Drinks are self serve. They offer char grilled burgers and chicken sandwiches as well a gyros. Their daily soups are very good - like Chicken Rice on Wednesday. I love the Greek salad with feta cheese, peperocinis, tomato wedges, carrot, onion and Kalamata olives over fresh crispy lettuce. I also like the BBQ beef sandwich. It is thin sliced beef with BBQ sauce served on a sesame roll. The Italian beef is tastless, but nice and tender so it needs the BBQ kick. I have also had the chicken kebob served with rice and pita and a dill sauce. This is a good lunch spot to dine in o...Read More

David's Bistro

Restaurant

Quote:
This is a really excellent spot that would be easy to miss if you didn't know it was there. It is located in a little stip mall called Norwood Plaza, at Wolf Road and Ponynesian Drive. The dining rooms have dark wood walls and fireplaces, adding to a cozy atmosphere. David's Bistro features French-American cuisine, but there is a definite Asian influence in many of the choices. There are steak, pork, duck, fish, seafood, and pasta options. We had an appetizer of asparagus wrapped in grilled tenderloin served with sticky rice and a teriyaki dipping sauce. The Brie appetizer sounded decadent, too. The entrees included some great fusion choices, both on the menu and as nightly specials....Read More

RAM Restaurant

Restaurant

Quote:
I finally made it to the new RAM Restaurant for lunch. It is a brew-pub-type atmosphere featuring Big Horn Brewing Co. beers. Since it was lunch, I opted for an iced tea, however. They pack it in at lunch. The restaurant was full, so we sat in the bar area. The service was quick and attentive. I had a yummy chicken almond salad with a ginger dressing. My cohort had a 1-pound "Cub" burger. He ate the whole thing! It was huge and came with delicious french fries and a dill pickle. It is a little pricey for lunch out in the burbs. The total with tip and tax for two of us was $27. The parking situation is odd, as there is very limited space, but a parking structure adjascent to the office...Read More

Giordano's on Rush

Restaurant | "GIORDANO'S"

Quote:
Giordano's is a Chicago-style pizza chain you will see all over Chicagoland. This is one of my favorite lunch spots. I often run in and get a spinach baby stuffed pizza to go for $6. When dining-in, the service is fast and attuned to the lunchtime rush. They can accommodate large groups well so it is a good choice for an office outing. For lunch they have soups, salads and sandwiches as well as the baby stuffed pizza for one in spinach, sausage, pepperoni and plain cheese. I have also had the Italian sub, which was pretty good. I like their fresh salads and minestrone soup. They have a great lunch deal that includes an individual stuffed pizza, soup or salad and a drink for like $7 - the best ...Read More

Gino's East

Restaurant

Quote:
Gino's East is another Chicago-style pizza local chain restaurant. They feature a traditional Chicago deep-dish pizza with golden buttery crust and a chunky vine-ripened-tomato sauce. They have a great lunch special. You get an individual-sized deep-dish pizza, salad or soup, and a drink for around $6.99. It's great. I like the veggie pizza. It's filled with zucchini, peppers, onions, mushrooms, etc. They have pastas, salads, and sandwiches too. But I always opt for the little pizza deal. The lunchtime service is speedy.

Walter's on Centerstage

Restaurant | "Walter's"

Quote:
Walter's has been around forever. You are seated in what feels like someone's patio. Dinners are priced at $15 to $20 and come with a salad. I got a chicken marsala served over spaghetti. It was more of an Asian spiced dish than the Italian classic. If was good anyway. I was surprised that despite the price, the tables had vinyl tablecloths and paper napkins. Service is prompt and friendly. I like to go for an upscale lunch occasionally too.

JOE CAPUTO & SONS FRUIT MARKET

Attraction | "JOE CAPUTO & SONS FRUIT MARKET"

Quote:
Don't let the name fool you. While can indeed stock up on lovely, fresh and good-priced produce, this is a great traditional Italian Market. It has that Italian market smell when you walk in. The deli counter has an array of olives, cheeses and lunch meats. There is also a fresh meat counter and a bakery section with canolis, napolians, rum cakes and more. They have every shape of imported pasta and canned tomatoes and sauces. The bread selection is wonderful, too. I grew up going to stores like these on the weekend to stock up of the Italian specialties you can't get at the regular grocer. The aisles are small and crowded and during the holidays you will wait at the deli counter, number slip ...Read More
