Overview

Crater Lake is a volcano that blew its top about 7,000 years ago, leaving the surrounding area covered with volcanic rock. On your way up, be sure to stop along the pumice flats and take a short walk through the desolation. Almost nothing grows here as the soil offers very little of a foot hold for seeds to take root. Entry into the park will cost you and camping ranges from to at the three campgrounds found in the park. Take a stroll to Sun Notch Viewpoint, or a strenuous hike to the watch tower on top of Mt. Scott, the highest peak in the park.Quick Tips: The lake is located high in the Cascade Mountain range and at 7,100 ft can be hot one day and cold the next. Be ...Read More

Nothing special other than this is the only place on the rim to stop for a bite. Take a break from driving, sit down and enjoy the sites.
In the evening you can watch the lake glow with reflections of the sunset.

Heading east from Rim Village, you come to the turnoff for the Sun Notch Viewpoint. This is a nice easy stroll of only 1/2 mile that almost any family member can accomplish. Your rewards are spectacular. Phantom ship is almost unseen from any other angles but from here you get to see the broad side of the rock formation. The deep blue of the lake makes it appear as if it is coming out of nowhere. On a calm day, the reflection is almost perfect.

Watchman Peak is a healthy hike for just about anyone. However, the rewards are spectacular. From here you get to look down onto Wizard Island, and the whole of Crater Lake. Look both north and south to other peaks in the Cascade Range.

Wizard Island Boat Tour Photo, Crater Lake National Park, Oregon
Quote:
For a unique way to see Crater Lake take a Ranger guided, 2 hour boat tour. The boats take you around the lake and onto Wizard Island. Tours are open from July through September and, at the peak of the season, 9 tours are offered each day. Tickets can be purchased at the parking lot near the Cleatwood Cove Trailhead.
The 700 foot drop to the boat launch may seem easy, but remember you have to climb back up. Imagine climbing to the top of a 60 story building and you will get an idea of what the trip back up to the parking area will be like. Be prepared. People with breathing and heart problems are discouraged from making the trip.
