Cape town is amazing. The whole place has a ‘feel’ about it, a very warm and friendly spirit. It was like nowhere I have ever been. I checked into my hostel and one of the owners bought me a beer to say ‘welcome'

I walked into the centre of town and breathed in that spirited air. I studied my map and worked out how much time and money it would cost to do all the usual things (Table Mountain, Cape of Good Hope). In the end it did not matter, I did all those things. I do not know how much it cost or how long it took, I just remember doing it and loving it. That is how Cape Town works. It is a truly fantastic place that really will leave you smiling.

Quick Tips:

Best Way To Get Around:

Getting around town is easy with a Ricki. A Ricki is a type of taxi. It looks like a shed, attached to a very small car. Be warned, Ricki’s get very full (they say there is always room for one more). You can wave a Ricki down in the street (when you see one that is) or just call them up and they will be there in minutes. Ricki’s are cheap, fast and fun (call 423-4888).

Fantastic, the best hostel I have ever stayed in. The staff, the people everyone was great, so very friendly. The hostel itself, was very clean and comfortable. They have some very cheap dorm rooms, or for a little extra you can rent a furnished apartment (very very nice). The bar, is popular with guests and locals, and is a great place to meet new people. Oaklodge makes a big (family like) dinner for all the guests each week. They have a mix of local cuisine, and food from around the world.

Attraction | "Green Square Market"

amazing, a real culture corner. Try your hand at haggling, hahaha. Shirts, trousers, skirts, material, bags, beads, earings, ornaments, carvings, toys and games. For no reason should this be missed. Oh yeh, it's closed on sunday (like everything else).

Attraction | "Cigar Bar"

Pretty impressive. The price of drinks gets lower, the longer you stay.

If you are offered cigars and you do not have a small fortune to spend, politely decline.

There are pictures of Hollywood actors on the wall, smoking huge cigars.

Spend a few hours here and feel like a millionaire.

chapmans peak
The most scenic route to cape point is the road past 'Chapmans peak'. This cliff-hugging road, weaves it's way (monte carlo style) round the edge of the Cape Peninsula, with the Atlantic Ocean to your right.
Cape Point
Talk about breathtaking. Talk about amazing. The whole 'Cape' is a huge nature reserve. You have to pay to get in, I can't remember how much it was (it was cheap) and students get discount.

There are wild Baboons and ostriches running around, and whales swimming in the sea.

When you get to the end of the park you face a 10-20 minute walk (mostly uphill) to Cape Point.

From here you can see the Indian and Atlantic oceans meet. If you pull a world map out, you will see that the next piece of land is Antarctica.

Take a photo and a deep breath.
