The area where I work

A December 2001 trip to London by janmarie

I work in the east End of London.. I hope to tell the reader about some of the lesser known places, these places are steeped in history and well worth a detour from the 'tourist trail'

Leaving the station at Limehouse, go onto Commercial Rd and turn left..At the traffic lights is Butcher Brow. This got its name in the 16th Century because so many vogages of exploration set off from here near the river (Thames) that Butcher's set up shop to supply meat. It was here that Amrtin Frobisher first set out on his many journeys in seach of the Northwest Passage. On the corner The White Swan Pub stands on the site of the 16th century White Hart. The railway bridge that crosses the road was used to serve the docks. Origially the carriages were moved by attaching them to a 3mile long wire rope, which was wound around drums. Before the train left all stations had to signal that they were ready, hence this was the first railway to be controlled by electric telegraph. In 1849 Steam trains were introduced. This track in still in use nowadays by the DLR ( Docklands light railway).

Quick Tips:

Don't expect this area to be like the West End of London..There are a few eating places locally.

Best Way To Get Around:

Limehouse station is on the DLR (Docklands light railway). Zone 2.. You can also get there by buses 15.. and 115..
