It is hard to explain to most people where Dubois, Wyoming, is located! However, if you ask if they have ever seen a Marlboro ad their eyes light up with recognition. Welcome to Dubois, a place where many Marlboro ads have been photographed.

Overview

Horse Creek
If you are a big city person who requires a constant onslaught of high tech entertainment then Dubois isnt' the place for you. If you are the type of person who can appreciate the most rugged kind of nature, a variety of interesting locals, and wildlife that is limitless, Dubois is the place for you.

Make sure to take a drive up Horse Creek, look for moose, elk, deer, and the occassional grizzly bear. Don't forget to take a spare tire and make sure you have a full tank of gas.

Stop at the Rustic Pine Tavern for a beer. It is the local watering hole and a delightful place to hear some great stories.

Quick Tips:

Hungry? The Cowboy Cafe has the best breakfasts in town...The Rustic Pine Steakhouse has great dinners...

The museum and Big Horn Sheep center are the main attractions in town, so stop in to find out what made Dubois!

Pack plenty of clothes. Dubois can be hot or freezing cold (-20 F)...and sometimes it snows in July!

Best Way To Get Around:

Well, there aren't many choices in this department! Walking is an option and so is cycling...if you don't mind that the nearest "big" town (Jackson or Riverton) is about 80 miles. There aren't many taxis, but if you are lucky somebody might have a spare hay bale in the back of their truck. Buses don't go through town. Basically you need to rent a car (a 4WD SUV is best).

Plenty of horses around...you just need to find someone willing to take you for a ride.

In the winter snowmobiling and dog-sledding are the most popular options.

This is a historic hotel that was frequently used as a stop over for people traveling to Yellowstone in the early days. The building is gorgeous and the decorations are cozy.

Rooms in the main building as well as cabins available. Either choice is excellent and will not be a disappointment.

The main sitting room is like stepping back in time. The hotel owners are friendly and always willing to socialize.

Restaurant

This is the local stop. The service is sassy and reliable...although not always immediate. The waitresses know your name and life history by the time the meal is served.

Not gourmet, but really good on a cold day...or after a night on the town. Everything is served from pasta to buffalo burgers! Breakfast is the best meal of the day...especially the skillets!

Great place to check out the locals, it is not uncommon for everyone to know each other and conversations will go from table to table. Good place to find out where the best fishing is...or if you need directions to anyone's house they'll probably tell you!!!

Attraction

Imagine living in a "Western" movie...complete with a range of rustic furniture, a variety of taxidermy, a mouthy bartender, 2 pool tables, and of course the local color.

The locals are friendly and always willing to dance on a Saturday night! They are famous for being warm and welcoming and they usually remember a face. It is the type of place that people return year after year.

The furniture is all made from knotted pine wood and it looks incredible. It can be a bit hard to drink in peace with hundreds of animals eyes staring at you...but the place is like a natural history museum!
