Sioux Falls

A November 2001 trip to Sioux Falls by Laura

Quote: I go to Sioux Falls about 4 times a year for business. It really is a nice little town on the eastern edge of South Dakota with a population of over 100,000. The people are friendly.

Sioux Falls

Overview

Quote:
See the actual Sioux Falls, the downtown is quaint and filled with little art galleries and interesting little shops.

Quick Tips:

Best Way To Get Around:

You will need a car. There are some taxis, but if you want the freedom to get around, a car is needed. Bring some change for the parking meters downtown.

Hampton Inn Sioux Falls

Hotel | "Hampton Inn"

Quote:
I decided to try the Hampton Inn for my most recent stay.

The room was a little small, but I liked the free high speed internet and no charge for local or 800 # calls. The staff was friendly and supplied cookies and punch for an evening snack.

There is a free breakfast in the morning from 6 to 10 am, but I did not make it. I had a coffee from the in-room coffee maker.

It is close to the Empire Mall and a bevy of chain restaurants like the Outback Steak House.

Runza Restaurant

Restaurant

Quote:
Runza restuarants are only available in SD and NE. I love this place. A "Runza" - is sort of like a pasty you would get in the Upper Penninsula of Michigan. But the Runza bread is fluffy like a hamburger bun stuffed with ground beef cabbage, onion and spices. I order serveral and bring them home with me to Chicago. Runza fries are the yummy crinkle cut kind. They also offer burgers, chicken sandwiches, milk shakes and a playroom for kids. I drive miles out of my way to get Runzas - they don't have them where I come from.

Minerva's Restaurant

Restaurant | "MINERVA'S RESTAURANT & BAR "

Quote:
In the heart of quaint downtown Sioux Falls, Minerva's is probably one of the best places in town. For lunch, everyone raves about the enormous salad bar available as an all-you- care-to-eat entree. At dinner the menu offers nice choices of chicken, fish, and meat. I like the Asian grilled chicken with sautéed vegetables. At lunch I have had a great Cajun pasta with chicken and a kick of spices which I enjoyed. This is a lovely place to take clients. The service is friendly and efficient. For dinner it is a little more pricey with entrees at about $18. It has some amazing pork tenderloin with a balsamic reduction and my colleagues raved about the steaks. The portions are hearty and come ...Read More

Falls Park

Attraction

Quote:
This lovely natural wonder gave the city its name. There are viewing areas, concrete walkways and picnic areas allow sightseers to enjoy the beauty of the area. Some of Sioux Falls' earliest buildings, including the foundation of the Queen Bee Mill built in 1887 and a hydroelectric plant built in 1908 are there. I am not sure if they were always there or moved with the creation of the park. There is an observation tower and a visitor center. The day I was there, the place was dead. We were the only 2 people walking around which made it serene, but also made it feel unappreciated. It is lovely and important part of Sioux Falls.

Zandbroz

Attraction

Quote:
Zandbroz features specialty gifts like one-of-a-kind greeting cards, books and household items like candles and vases. It is also home to "Soda Falls", an old-fashioned soda fountain with a new spin at the back of the shop. You can get the old ice cream standy-bys or a capuccino or iced mocha latte. I always stop in and stock up on some really unique and fun greeting cards and some fun, earthy gift items.

Ten Thousand Villages is sort of a chain store found in quaint little downtowns in places like Champaign, IL, Alexandria, VA, Mishawaka, IN and Sioux Falls, SD. Their claim to fame is that they "provide vital, fair, income to Third World people by selling their handicrafts and telling their stories in North America." It really is a neat little store with really good prices and great for people that collect animal items like elephants, giraffes rhinos, etc. I like to stop in and get some fun trinkets. I think many employees are volunteers and the store is supposedly nonprofit. Most items are from Africa and Latin America. Some of the stuff you will find at a Pier 1 or a Cost Plus World Market, but they...Read More

Empire Mall

Attraction

Quote:
Empire Mall is like any other mall, but is the only one for people living between Denver and Minneapolis. There are 180 stores including the Harvest Cafe Court. The trash cans in the food court open for you and say thank you when you toss away the trash. There is a Younker's, Marshall Fields, Sears and a JC Penney, among all the other typical mall retailers like The Gap, Limited, American Eagle, Bath and Body Works, etc. I always stop in when I'm in town for work.
