If you enjoy natural walks, kayak trips, encounters with the wildlife, then you must visit the J.N. "Ding" Darling National Wildlife Refuge on Sanibel Island. The refuge consists in more than 6000 acres of wetlands and island uplands on the north side of the island. You can enjoy walking or canoeing, fishing, bike trails and among the different types of animals you can see alligators, otters, raccoons, hawks, bald eagles, ospreys, armadillos and possums. In the winter you could have a chance to view a manatee or two swimming by.

Quick Tips:

By the way, when crossing the causeway, make sure that you are looking for dolphins. They are everywhere especially on cool mornings, but beware as people slow down as the drive to take a glimpse of the gulf water mascots. Also, watch out for the pelicans, which like to glide along the causeway right next to your car! This can be very distracting and watch your speed limit. They re-enforce the law.

Best Way To Get Around:

The best way to get around is to rent a car. There are bike trails from Sanibel Island to Captiva but my suggestion is to rent a car, that way you can explore the neighbor city of Ft Myers.
Accommodations vary, from standard hotel rooms to luxurious beach and bayside homes. We stayed at a Harbourside Hotel Room, which consisted of 1 king bed, small table and chairs, coffee maker, small fridge and a screened balcony over looking the marina.

There is a roman tub in the bathroom, which is very spacious.

Best paella I ever had. The daquiris and margaritas are out of this world. The atmophere is very relaxed and will put you in to the tropical mood in no time. You must try the cuban bread! Riquisimo!
