This is a good family vacation place. There are miles of bike trails and bikes can be rented or brought from home.

Best Way To Get Around:

Have a car. You can now fly directly to Hilton Head via Continental Airlines. Otherwide fly into Savanah via Charlotte.

South Beach Marina Village has the charm of a New England fishing village coupled with a view of the Carolina Lowcountry. South Seaport Cafe features a wide variety of local seafood - try shecrab soup, Crabmeat Stuffed Grouper and Snapper Parmesan. For landlubbers like me thay have steaks, ribs and chicken choices. There is a nice view and a relaxed atmosphere. There is a Raw Bar Happy Hour from 5 - 6:30 pm. They also have a kid's menu.

Chances are you have seen someone around the country in a Salty Dog t-shirt. The cafe offers lunch and dinner and lots of souviners. At lunch there are sandwiches like jerk chicken, fried grouper, gardenburger, hamburgers etc. It is one of those famed, popular tourist places - good for a stop once. For the kids, Jake the "Salty Dog" may stop by for a photo op.

Crazy Crab

The Crazy Crab is casual dining with local seafood favorites prepared the way you choose -grilled, broiled, blackend, etc. They feature fresh local seafood in a picturesque old warf type setting on the water. My lunch was not partularly memorable. I had a chicken sandwich and fries. My sister enjoyed the shecrab soup and a salad. It seems like there are a lot of these type of restaurants around Hilton Head - water side dining with fish and steak selsections. None impressed me as being particularly wonderful or special.

Side trip to historic Beaufort, SC

A nice little side trip from Hilton Head is a drive over to historic Beaufort. Beautiful antebellum homes some restored to granduer can be viewed. It is also supposedly where Forest Gump was filmed.



Your first stop into town should be at the Beaufort Visitors Center at 1106 Carteret Street.



We went on a Sunday and the town was very quiet. On Sat or weekday, more stores and sights are likely open. Nevertheless, we found local pottery and epicurian treats to purchase.
