An August 2001 trip to Veliko Tarnovo by Richard Finkers

The anciant CapitalMore Photos

Veliko Tarnovo is one of the anciant bulgarian towns. During the first and second empire the palace of the king was situated here. A place with big attraction and big importance for the anciant bulgarian empire. These days merly a ruin but still you can see the outline of the site, and the impressive surroundings, feeling being back in the history of Bulgaria. Several churches also can be visited. The old part of the town Veliko Tarnovo is a pleasant place to stay and the surrounding nature is impressive

Overview

The Town
Veliko Tarnovo is the old capital from Bulgaria's first and second Empire. Only ruins of the ancient town are still left and open for public. The beautifull nature is certainly an extra feature which is a must to explore. Several churches are open for visits.

Quick Tips:

Depending on the amount of groups/ tourist they play a lightshow around the ancient city during the evening. A show where they combine music and light around the contours of the historic sight. Don't miss it when they do play it.

Best Way To Get Around:

There are several hotels in the old part of the modern Veliko Tarnovo. Hotel Comfort (other journal entry) is certainly the one with the best view over the ancient city. The old town is relative compact so walking is the best way to move around. Otherwise a cab will take you fast from place to place. If you travel from Sofia, Veliko Tarnovo is on the route to Varna for most of the Bus companys driving throught the country. But don't wait for the last moment to find a trip back, since most places in the bus are reserved for passagers traveling from/to sofia/ varna.
View from the Hotel
A basic 4 person room with fixed beds and shower. All basic needs are there. Even a tv set in the lobby of the hotel. The owners are a friendly couple who will inform you about all you need to know about the city and around. The view from the room is just marvolous over the historic site.

Merely the contours of the old palace and the city surroundint the place are still there, though some parts have been restored, but still you can feel the impressive site of the ancient Bulgarian capital city of Veliko Tarnovo. Durint the first and second Bulgarian kingdom, the palace of the king was situated at this site. A place of great historic importance and a very interesting site to visit.
