Florida Jaunts and Haunts

Best Of IgoUgo

Overview

Quote:
Cockroach Contests, (Palmetto Bugs to the polite class) lots of mosquitoes (but I think Alaska has more), Frank Lloyd Wright and Dali. White sand beaches with pastel coquina shells, the ultimate roadside attractions that time has passed by along with the interstate. Busch Gardens. Ybor City (pronouced E-bore), Tarpon Springs Gyros (pronounced Yee-rows) The palatial pink Don Cesar Hotel or another place I'd pick and will write about. Mel's Hot Dogs and the wonderful Columbia competing with Columbia Avenue better known as Boleche' Boulevard. Salsa and tradition. The silence of Bok Towers or the celebration of Gasparilla. Saturday in Plant City at the Whistle Stop Cafe. Don't bother coming on Sunday ...Read More

Cracker Barrel

Quote:
The Cracker Barrel chain has become a tradition for travelers. Located at exits from interstates throughout the South, they provide consistently good southern style cooking combined with a souvenir store. They cater to those traveling the highways who may not be adventurous but aren’t willing to make each meal a bagged drive through experience. If this sounds as though I’m being negative please let me clarify. While you wait for your table you can rock in the row of very comfortable rocking chairs on the covered porch. While you are decompressing, the kids can divert themselves with puzzles on the dining tables or compete playing checkers nearby. Cracking fires in huge fireplaces staves o...Read More

Columbia Restaurant

Best Of IgoUgo

Restaurant

Quote:
Located in the heart of Ybor City (the historic sector of Tampa), with humble roots the Columbia began in 1905 as an immigrant's cafe. Today it's one of Tampa's celebrated dining locations. The exterior is still lovely though a bit disheveled with the original wooden arches and handpainted tiles and fountain. The interior is a graceful combination of antique Cuban/Spanish decor, fresh linens, black jacketed waiters and wonderful food. Whether you business lunch on half a pressed Cuban sandwich and a cup of Spanish Bean Soup or supper on Trout La Russe' and Chicken and Yellow Rice take time to end your meal lingering over Cafe Con Leche' and perhaps a flan dessert. It's tradition. M...Read More

The Whistle Stop Cafe

Do you remember a Cherry Coke? A Nickel Cherry Coke? The Whistle Stop Cafe is located in the old pharmacy building in Plant City along side the railroad tracks.

Inside you'll find historical pictures of the town, model trains and yes- absolutely- a nickel cherry coke with a marchino cherry.

While you indulge in deli sandwiches and the soda of your choice you may just have a real train interupt your meal as it chugs by. Wave at the caboose. Hold the stem and bite into that carmine red cherry with all the pleasure you did as a child.

Rick's on the River

Rick's on the River Photo, Florida, United States

Ready for a little Key West in Tampa, Florida? Rick's is a place locals know and love. Located off Columbus Drive on the Hillsborough River it isn't in the best area of town but don't let that stop you. Rick's is located right on the river and has a small marina so if you come by boat you can pull right. Many of the regulars are boat residents in tanks and shorts who rub shoulders with the business suits escaping the short distance from downtown for a little bit of heaven. Outside picnic tables under umbrellas and an outdoor bar. Inside booths, pool tables and televisions. Free music most nights. Great food. Don't miss the grouper sandwiches and the onion rings....Read More

Ybor City Museum

Best Of IgoUgo

Attraction | "Ybor (pronounced EE-BOR) City"

Quote:
A city in a city? Ybor is located in the heart of Tampa. Its motto is "A City With a Past" and is a designated Historic Landmark District. Originally populated by Cuban and Italian immigrants who worked in the famous cigar factories and the infamous rum running trade (including alleged secret passages beneath the district for alcohol and underground railroad slave movement) Ybor is rich in history. The past has passed through many stewardships. Falling into disrepair after the colorful hay days it has struggled from its cigar rich ashes to a fringe art district to a steamy Bourbon Street celebration district. Now with the creation of Centro Ybor and all the revitalization projects Ybor is dra...Read More

I think I wrote it all already. This is such a wonderful town. Stop by on Interstate 4 as you head from Tampa to Orlando and Mickey Mouse World. By all means stop at the Chamber of Commerce - you will be welcomed.

Webster Flea Market

Webster Flea Market Photo, Florida, United States
Quote:
Fresh vegetables, exotic birds, first editions, vintage clothing and the smell of food grilled outdoors. The Webster Flea Market is located (oddly enough) in Webster, Florida, a tiny town about 50 miles north of Tampa off Interstate 75. Likely Webster’s only claim to fame this is a dealer market (public welcome) only open on Mondays. Dealers arrive Sunday to set up stalls and tables and wait for morning when thousands of bargain hunters descend. About two thirds of the market is under tin roof and open stalls, the rest is open air with dealers set up in fields - perfect for November in Florida. Prices are more than reasonable and bargaining is expected. Remember many people come to...Read More

Each year when I get my new calendar and mark off the dates I can’t miss, one of them is the second weekend in November where I will head to the campus of Eckert College for the Festival of Reading. November in Florida doesn’t burn, it glows and so does this celebration of those who love good books and challenging thought. Why have you not heard of this before? The publicity is minimal, perhaps purposefully so. The actual list of participating authors is not on the website until the week before the festival. www.sptimes.com/reading_festival. The St. Petersburg Times Newspaper has sponsored the Festival of Reading for the past nine...Read More

Busch Gardens Tampa Bay Photo, Tampa, Florida
Quote:
Busch Gardens in Tampa offers something for everyone from the photographer to the animal lover to the thrill seeker to parents seeking to please their difficult-aged children. Although Disney World is wonderful I've found that Busch Gardens is much more relaxing and family oriented. Literally and amazingly set in the midst of a residential community in North Tampa it's hard to believe that traffic is whizzing by a few yards away as you tour this attraction. It is simply that well planned. Security is excellent. Areas where small children play such as The Land of the Dragons is carefully monitored for safety. Teenagers will enjoy all the thrill rides. Florida Holocaust Museum

Best Of IgoUgo

Attraction

Quote:
A few years ago the Florida Holocaust Museum opened in St. Petersburg. I'd read Sophie's Choice, seen historical newsreels, watched Schindler's List, absorbed history, listened to enough discussion. There was no reason to indulge in an exercise of graphic ugliness. Maybe next time I went to Washington D.C. I would go to the National Museum- that's one of the requirements of visiting D.C.- but Florida? A Jewish friend of mine said that she would never go. I wondered- if you don't go and I don't go, who goes? And what holds us both back? I went. The bland exterior in downtown St. Petersburg. Miniaml cost- $6.00 for adults, $2.00 for students. It is not recommended for young children....Read More
