After landing in Frankfurt I learned that I had 4 hours until my next flight. Again the question, what to do with my time? Sit at the airport and observe people or go out and see old Frankfurt ? In Frankfurt the historical centre of the city is called Romerberg. "Romer", was the site of coronation celebrations during the Holy Empire.

Quick Tips:

The airport is located 12 km west of the city centre. From Airport Terminal 1, you can take the regional trains S8 and S9 to the Main Station or the city centre. These two trams run above ground and offer interesting views of the suburbs. It takes 15 minutes to reach the Main Station. The return ticket cost approximately 11 DM.

From there I walked to the Main Square, the restored City Hall, Judisches Museum, St. Paul's Church, through Hasengasse and back to the old historic main square. In Frankfurt skyscrapers have been added to the traditional urban German architecture they have not taken over it.

On the way back to the Main Station I walked to the Goethe Haus. Goethe, the great writer, was born here in 1749 and lived until 1775, when he moved to Weimar.

My escapade from the airport to the city and back took me approximately two and a half hours, at a very leisurely pace.

Best Way To Get Around:

* From Terminal 1 take regional trains S8 or S9 to the Main Station.
* Buy return ticket approximately 11 DM.
* Trains are every 15 minutes.
* From Airport to the Main Station ride is 15 minutes.
