Quote: Indians are notoriously fond of sweets. North Indians, in particular. And cosmopolitan Delhi offers everything from ghee-laden local sweets to fancy French patisserie, from delicate Bengali sweets to kunafa. A bunch of reviews of some of the city’s best-known sweet shops specializing in Western sweets.

Whipped

Restaurant | "Lives up to its reputation"

Just inside the door of Whipped, on the wall, is a framed certificate to the effect that Whipped has been voted, by the users of Zomato (India’s premier restaurant database site) one of Delhi’s top dessert places. We, coming here for the first time, were a bit dubious. We’ve been to other places flaunting certificates and rave reviews, but with nothing really exceptional to back that up. Whipped, I am happy to say, did live up to its reputation.Whipped sits on the main road, leading from PVR Savitri cinema, into Greater Kailash – II. It’s a small place, with ‘whipped’ written in hot pink and white against a background of dark wood. A small flight of stairs leads up into a tiny verandah with ...Read More

Restaurant | "The usual suspects, and spotty too"

Till a few years back, most of Delhi’s bakeries tended to focus on a few select types of products: chocolate cakes, cream-and-pineapple cakes, tiramisu, éclairs, cookies, muffins, and tarts, the latter usually lemon, chocolate, or fruit. Then some of the more daring bakeries and confectionaries began to venture into more exotic territory, coming up with less well-known delicacies like madeleines, financiers, and (now very popular) cupcakes. Along with the evolution of baked goods available, there’s also been a sudden surge in the number of small bakeries. Dolce Amante, which I came across listed on a food website, is one of these. The Dolce Amante website, when explored, sounded tantalizing e...Read More

Maison Des Desserts

Restaurant | "A modest range of desserts"

For something that calls itself the ‘House of Desserts’, I’d have expected Maison des Desserts to be crammed full of interesting pies, cakes, cupcakes, cookies, and more. I’d seen rave reviews of the pavlova, the cheesecake, and the banoffee pie, and some Delhiites had recommended this as the best place for cakes in the city. A quick look at Maison des Desserts menu online, and we saw that they also offered a limited range of sandwiches, pastas, etc, so we decided to kill two birds with one stone—have lunch, and get some desserts packed.Maison des Desserts is at the far end of Hauz Khas Village. When you enter the village, keep walking until you reach the gate that leads into the Hauz Khas m...Read More

Restaurant | "Good stuff, barring some muffins"

Till a few years back, Red Moon Bakery was at the local market near our house—just about five minutes’ walk from our home. My husband discovered it on his way home from work one day, and dropped in to see what it was. They had a large range of tarts, pies, cakes and whatnot, and my husband, liking the look of the items on sale, bought some. We loved their baked goods so much, we bought stuff again. And again. And, we discovered that they offered hefty discounts on most unsold items after 7 PM (in an effort to get rid of stock—which cheered us, since it meant they were actually conscientious about not selling old stock). The day Red Moon Bakery closed in our neighbourhood (Sarita Vihar—fairly close t...Read More

Mad Over Donuts

Restaurant | "Really good doughnuts!"

Mad Over Donuts Photo, New Delhi, India
Quote:
Mad Over Donuts is a Singapore-based doughnut chain that came to India and set up shop a few years ago. They opened stores and counters in various places in Delhi and the other major metropolises, beginning with a very basic sweetshop design: doughnuts, both plain and with an assortment of toppings, all sweet: chocolate, coffee, fruit, cream, etc. Then, a while back, they started experimenting and expanding. Now, Mad Over Donuts (or, MOD, as they abbreviate the name) also does some savoury doughnuts with cheese-herbs-and-spice toppings, plus their stores offer a small but mostly adequate range of coffees, both hot as well as cold.We were at the Select CityWalk Mall the other day, and since on...Read More
