Emly Restaurant, Tamarind Hotel

Restaurant | "Surprisingly tasty"

On the road from Gangtok to Lachung, our driver and guide decided we should eat at the Tamarind Hotel in Mangan. They dropped us off outside, and headed down the road to a place they preferred. Clearly they thought we couldn’t deal with their chosen dining option but we’d get a clean toilet and safe food at the Tamarind. I suspect all the tourist drivers had a tiny number of places they trust not to make their clients sick - and if your clients don’t get sick, you’re more likely to get tipped. It’s good logic.I know nothing about the Tamarind, only it’s empty restaurant called Emly. Emly is a pure veg restaurant - so it serves no meat and no eggs. That was fine for us. We were the on...Read More

Restaurant | "Cheap and Filling"

The long drive from Gangtok to Lachung - or vice versa - is too much to do without a stop for lunch and a pee but our driver and guide seemed reluctant to expose us to local restaurants, clearly unaware that we’ll eat at any old roadside place without worrying about it. Perhaps they knew the ridiculous amount we’d paid for our holiday and were reluctant to take us anywhere too down market. On the way to Lachung, they dropped us at a hotel restaurant in Mangan, but on the way back, the timing was wrong for that place. We told them we were happy to eat wherever they planned to eat and so we had lunch at a small roadside restaurant next to a filling station near to Phodong. The receipt for our lunch say...Read More

Hotel | "Much more than I expected"

Hotel Novotel Mumbai Photo, Mumbai, India

When deciding where to stay in Mumbai, I took two things into consideration. Firstly my desire to use my Accor Club points rather than cash, and secondly the desire to keep things simple. We’d stayed downtown a couple of years earlier and knew a taxi into the city from the airport would take a long time and cost a lot so I picked a hotel on the beach, not far from the hotel. In theory it should have been a cheap and easy ride but having a taxi driver who didn’t know where he was going, wouldn’t admit he couldn’t read the address and then tried to drop us on the beach miles from the hotel all made for an ‘exciting’ journey. Thankfully we finally persuaded him to do what he could have d...Read More

Khecheopalri Lake

Attraction | "By the lake"

Khecheopalri Lake is located about 25-30 km from the town of Pelling and it takes one and a half hours to drive there. Based on that speed, it would be a surprise if I tell you that the road conditions are simply shocking. It’s a holy lake – probably filled with the blessings of people relieved to finally have got out of their cars after bouncing around the pot holes. Our driver Bassang was a smart fellow and he always knew how to avoid the crowds. As we headed to Pelling we passed other cars of tourists pulled up by the roadside looking at various waterfalls. "On the way back, madam" he said each time, putting his foot down and rushing on. His mission was to get there before everyone else ...Read More

After nearly six hours driving from Darjeeling along shocking roads, we eventually arrived in Pelling. It’s a small town clinging to the side of a mountain, and split into three parts - Upper Pelling, Middle Pelling and Lower Pelling. Our hotel - the Newa Regency - was in the lower part of the town. Just ten or twenty years ago there was almost nothing to Pelling. Then it was ‘discovered’ as a viewpoint and got a reputation as one of the best places for views of Mount Kanchenjunga, the world’s third largest peak and a source of local pride and love. After a day and half of solid rain in Darjeeling, the old lady had finally put in an appearance, gracing us with fabulous clear views on our final morning...Read More
