The Smoothie Factory

Restaurant | "Good salad and great smoothies"

The Indian franchisee of the international The Smoothie Factory is a group called Sarvshiva Brands Pvt Ltd. Although The Smoothie Factory’s first store was set up in Texas in 1996, they’ve only just arrived in India—and this store is the first in the country. We go to Epicuria Mall every now and then because it’s close to home and offers a choice of places to eat out. This time, we decided to go and check out The Smoothie Factory.Located on the ground floor of the mall, next to Dunkin’ Donuts and The Chatter House, The Smoothie Factory occupies a cheerily-coloured corner of the building. There are a couple of white-painted tables and cha...Read More

Nourish Organic Foods

Restaurant | "Organic, vegan, gluten-free, and more"

Nourish Organic Foods Photo, New Delhi, India
Quote:
Nourish Organics made their appearance a few years ago in Delhi’s markets with a range of organic packed products: healthy (really healthy!) granola bars, muesli, trail mix, roasted and spiced chickpeas, and organic grains, such as flax seeds, amaranth seeds, and quinoa. While they have built up a chain of small stores of their own (including tiny kiosks at malls), most food stores also carry a selection of Nourish Organics’s products. We’ve bought these on and off (and enjoyed whatever we’ve tried), so when we heard that they’d actually set up a restaurant, we decided we had to go try it out.The store—billed on their site as the ‘flagship store’—is a tiny one in Mehar Chand Market, just beh...Read More

Uzuri Deck and Dining

Restaurant | "African and European in India"

Uzuri Deck and Dining Photo, New Delhi, India
Quote:
Uzuri opened in October 2013 to mixed reviews. Some people said it was great, some complained about the food being pretty average. Some—more shallow than the rest—raved about how good-looking one of the two chefs (Guy Clark, who was a finalist in Masterchef South Africa) is. We decided we had to check it out for ourselves (and, no: not to get a glimpse of Guy Clark!)We therefore went to Uzuri one Saturday for lunch, along with my sister, her husband, and their teenaged son. The restaurant, which sits on the second floor, is approached up a stylishly dimly-lit staircase. Inside, the décor has distinctly African tones: the upholstery consists of lovely African prints which are echoed in the framed pi...Read More

The Chatter House

Best Of IgoUgo

Restaurant | "Not a place we’ll be returning to"

The Chatter House Photo, New Delhi, India
Quote:
Ever since Epicuria—Delhi’s first exclusively food mall—opened under the Nehru Place Metro Station, we’ve been visiting it off and on to check out the eateries it houses. We’ve been seeing new restaurants in the process of being readied, and The Chatter House—which calls itself a gastropub, and is situated next to Dunkin’ Donuts and Starbucks—was one that looked interesting. When we heard, the other day, that it had finally opened, we decided to drop by for lunch one day.The Chatter House tries to model itself on a somewhat posh British pub. The walls have a brick-and-mortar finish; the sloping ceiling is polished wood, from which hang chandeliers. The faux leather upholstery of the sofas and bar s...Read More

Cafe Ludus

Restaurant | "The cushion says it all: Merde!"

Cafe Ludus Photo, New Delhi, India
Quote:
When we were shown into Café Ludus by a waiter, he asked us if we’d like to sit in the ‘library area’—a misnomer, really, since all it consists of is a set of green-painted shelves with a handful of books. We agreed, and were seated on an uncomfortably low sofa with a low table knocking at our knees. On the sofa opposite me was a cushion on which was printed ‘merde’. "Amusing," I said. Little did my husband and I realize, at that time, how very descriptive of Café Ludus that cushion would turn out to be.What do you expect when you enter a place that calls itself a café? Certainly not what we found. This place looks like a typical Delhi-style ‘lounge bar’: a combination of low tables and sofa...Read More

Le Bistro du Parc

Best Of IgoUgo

Restaurant | "Very good French food"

Le Bistro du Parc Photo, New Delhi, India
Quote:
Across the road from Moolchand Hospital in South Delhi is a small shopping centre. It consists mainly of banks, some eateries, and a few stores that sell clothing and accessories. There are trees, and a park. The park is bounded, on one side, by a very popular Italian eatery called Flavors of Italy. Across the park is a small plot of land that has had the dubious distinction of being home to a series of French restaurants, none of them too long-lived. The latest is Le Bistro du Parc.Le Bistro du Parc is a small place, with seating for only about 25 people or so. The mirrors on the walls, the large...Read More
