English Landscape Garden

Attraction | "English Garden North of the Palace"

The English Landscape Park is really an extension of the English-Chinese Garden, located in the northern section of Wilanów Park. To make the landscape look more English in style the land had to be changed, new trees planted, a stream, island and lake added. All these things happened at different stages from 1799 until 1821.The landscape garden I saw a few weeks ago probably looks nothing like the original layout as some of the buildings which have now been removed could be traced by following paths that were interwoven amongst tree groves. The lake is still the highlight of the park although I did notice that the eastern side of the lake was vastly overgrown. Swans were swimming on the l...Read More

Attraction | "A Garden that is Half English and Half Chinese"

There are so many parts to Wilanow Park and Gardens it is difficult to know where to start. I have already written about the Rose Garden so moving on from there I will tell you about the English-Chinese Garden which can be reached from the Rose Garden or by walking from the top terrace of the Baroque Garden in a southerly direction. The garden was once a farm that belonged to the palace. It was Izabella Lubomirska, wife of Stanisław Lubomirska that had a grand idea to transform the farm into a garden filled with unusual trees and vegetation. As you walk away from the Rose garden the path is hilly which leads to the Mount of Bacchus. When the Royal Family lived at the palace this area...Read More

Too late for the Roses

Story/Tip

I visited the Rose Garden at Wilanow Palace two weeks ago now, perhaps not the best time to visit such a garden as it was late in the year and most of the blooms had died off. Some pale pink roses were still flowering and from the terrace where I first stood the garden looked enchanting with its statues and bird fountains. I sat on the wall on the terrace because my hands were freezing and I was struggling to take photos. My bag was cluttered as usual and I was unable to find my gloves so I tipped the bag onto the wall and sorted it out. I found my bright orange gloves, put them on and at once felt a relef from the cold.Next to the terrace I noticed an iron pergola, it was in a sorry state...Read More

The Poster Museum (Muzeum Plakatu) at Wilanów is somewhere I have visited before, a very long time ago. I had actually forgotten all about it until I revisited Wilanów Palace last weekend. The museum is situated on Stanisława Kostki Potockiego, a small avenue to the right before you enter the grounds of the Wilanów complex. The path to the museum has been covered with pebbles and small stones so makes a noise as you walk down it. The building itself is elegant to look at with two stone statues of horses, one placed at each side of the archway to the entrance. I did wonder why horses were sat outside and then realised that the building has been converted from the old stables and carriage shed....Read More

Grobowiec Potockich (Potocki Tomb)

Attraction | "A Monster of a Tomb"

The Potocki Tomb is a mammoth piece of work and really cannot be missed when visiting the grounds of Wilanów Palace. I entered the grounds a different way on my last visit, walking past St Anna’s Church and onto a path leading to the tomb. The ne-Gothic design of the tomb designed by E Marconi is striking, I wouldn’t say it was beautiful but it certainly has a certain charm. There are a series of steps leading to the tomb but you are unable to touch the outside as there is a wrought iron fence all the way around the area where it stands. Two people were walking around, taking photographs when I entered the vicinity so I stood back and let them get on with their task and then later followed...Read More
