Grey Towers National Historic Site was dedicated by President John F. Kennedy in September 1963. Once the home of Gifford Pinchot, the founder of the USDA Forest Service and two-time governor of the State of Pennsylvania, Grey Towers was a very interesting and enjoyable experience.Pinchot's father James bought 3,000 acres overlooking the Delaware Water Gap valley and built the French style mansion in 1886. James Pinchot family had immigrated to America from France after the 1815 defeat of Napoleon Bonaparte. The Pinchot family's respect and admiration for Napolean is still visible at Grey Towers today. We took the hour long guided tour offered by a member of the US Forest D...Read More

Our main destination in Milford was the Grey Towers National Historic Site but in planning for our day trip, I looked up what else of interest was in the area. The Pike County Historical Society at the Columns was something that seemed right up our alley. In looking at their hours of operation, however, we were severely limited as they are only open Wednesday, Saturday & Sunday (1p - 4p). We made it work however, for the Wednesday we were in the Poconos. The Columns is a stately neo-gothic house built in 1904 and houses some extraordinary artifacts that are directly tied to Pike County. During our self-guided walk through the building, we each found a variety of points of interest. ...Read More

Of all of the great things we saw and did during our week-long vacation in the Pocono Mountains (and there were many), our dinner at Settlers Inn was unanimously a highlight for everyone! With Hawley, PA located in the northernmost area of the Pocono Mountains Region, we would not have normally traveled this far for dinner. But thanks to a Facebook giveaway by the Pocono Mountains Visitors Bureau, David won a gift certificate to Settlers Inn for a "romantic dinner for two" with a face value of $100.We decided to make the most of the experience, since his mom would soon be turning 80 years old so this dinner was as much about being a special celebration as sharing a meal in a very nice, f...Read More

After spending time at Bushkill Falls' Fudge Kitchen the day before, and opting not to buy at $15/lb, I found myself craving fudge. As we considered our day's activities, I mentioned wanting to find a candy shop near the timeshare to make a small purchase. We looked into what might be near us in E. Shroudsburg, but didn't really make an effort to go buy.As we were driving through Milford I thought surely we'd see a candy shop in the quaint little town. As we drove to Grey's Towers and then over to the Pike's County Historical Society & Museum, we saw nothing. So we decided to try the Garmin GPS unit and sure enough, she found Susi's Sweet Shop. Better yet, it was less than a mile ...Read More

A More Scenic Return to Pennsylvania Photo, Narrowsburg, New York
Quote:
Since the museums in Milford closed at 4pm and Settlers Inn opened for dinner at 5:30pm, we had some time to kill so we decided to take a ride north of Hawley into New York. Thinking it would be a pretty drive, I must admit being a bit disappointed as we drove out of the mountains into what is best described as rolling woodlands with little in the way of color. We did, however, stumble upon several places that were quite interesting. We did go far enough to reach Narrowsburg, NY via PA State Road 652 where we turned around and headed back. That was just about the perfect amount of "ride" to knock off 90 minutes, given that we did stop along the way for me to take some photos. Among the ...Read More
