This was another shopping excursion day trip to Monroe. Past faves including Decatur Dairy and Minhas Brewery & Distillery were on the itinerary. I also found a new cheese factory, bought some apples and enjoyed lunch downtown. I got out of the house early as I wanted to be able to tour the Silver-Lewis Cheese Factory Cooperative in Montecello, Wisconsin. When I called the day before, they suggested I arrive by 10am which meant being on the road no later than 7:30am since it was raining and I wanted to be sure to allow enough time to stop along the way should something catch my eye.The drive was relatively uneventful other than a short traffic back-up near Madison around ...Read More

It's hard to believe with all of my trips to Monroe, Wisconsin I had never stopped in at Baumgartner's Cheese Store and Tavern for lunch . . . or at least a look about. I am so glad that for this particular day trip, I scheduled time specifically to grab a sandwich.Sometimes people, especially women, have a difficult time walking into a restaurant to dine alone. When the establishment has "tavern" or "pub" in its name, the anxiety often ramps up even more. There is no reason, however, for anyone looking for a nice dining spot to feel uncomfortable about pulling up a stool at the bar and enjoying a meal . . . or an adult beverage.Located on the main square in Monroe, Baumgart...Read More

During my day trip to Monroe, cheese was on my shopping list as we prepared for our upcoming LONG road trip to Pennsylvania. I did some research to find a new cheese factory to visit and hopefully tour. I decided that the Silver-Lewis Cheese Factory Cooperative in Montecello would be the perfect stop along the way. They did not disappoint me!Before assuming I could take a tour, I called in advance. They told me that they offer "limited tours" and that it would be necessary to arrive early in the day as they are typically done with the day's production by noontime. I arrived at approximately 9:45am, which seemed just about perfect to see the full operation of cheese production from the...Read More

Who hasn't received a holiday gift pack of meats, cheeses and/or candies from the international food company Swiss Colony? Started as a home-based cheese maker and retailer in 1926, they have been providing the gift packs of food products since expanding from the founder's basement in 1954.I remember receiving my first sausage and cheese box in the US Mail probably 25 or 30 years ago. I also recall seeing a seasonal store in our local shopping mall around Christmas, offering a direct point of purchase for those who want to buy a gift and deliver it in person. Today Colony Brands continues to be a leading catalog mail order gift company, providing a full range of products and prices to m...Read More

Ten Eyck Orchard has been growing and selling apples since 1839 through six generations! I first learned of them during my Summer 2012 driving tour of the Barn Quilts of Green County as they have a lovely quilt on their unique round barn which is used to sort and store apples in a climate controlled and refrigerated environment. The barn is in and of itself, an attraction in this area. Built in 1919, the barn is also a product from this family orchard as the lumber used was also grown on their land. I was fortunate to have my winter 2013 photo of this barn and quilt included in the 2014 Barn Quilts of America calendar. This past summer, I also visited the orchard as they were a particip...Read More
