It was a beautiful day and so we decided to take a ride on a glass bottom boat and do a bit of snorkelling out near the coral reef. There are loads of opportunities to do this in the Belle Mare region of Mauritius and although I had bought a snorkel and goggles with me I was flipper less. That however, didn't proved to be a problem because the boat had some sparer ones that I could borrow for the duration of the trip.I was hoping to see some different fish to the ones that I'd seen whilst doing the sea bed walk ( see separate review), but as the two experiences are totally different I guess that I wasn't really that botherd. However, as we left the sandy beach behind us it was soon apparent...Read More

Sunshine in Mauritius

Story/Tip

After a 12 hour flight from Gatwick Airport in the UK our first glimpse of the small island of Mauritius was through the heavily misted windows of the BA airplane. It was just after 5.00 am and already the temperature was in the early 20's, but a heavy mist hung over the mountainous interior of the island and the sun was struggling to force its way through the clouds. The airport terminal building was a huge surprise as it was ultra-modern and significantly bigger than I would have expected. It was a fair work from the plane to the arrivals area and I was particularly keen to get there as I had slept only briefly on the flight. Passing through passport control was very efficient and "painl...Read More

All-Inclusive - an experience

Story/Tip

We've enjoyed several all inclusive holidays in the past but I'm not sure that I've ever written about the all-inclusive experience. There are of course several positives the main one being that once the holiday has been payed for the holiday expenses are down to a minimum. In our boutique hotel there was only one restaurant and a small bar but they would both prove capable of keeping us fed and watered for the duration of our stay.We could have three meals a day (that certainly wouldn't help any sensible eating regime) and for twelve hours (11.00 - 23.00 hrs) we were able to get our drinks from the bar. I said to my friend that I would happily buy him all the drinks he could manage (as lo...Read More

Hotel | "Our hotel for two weeks"

Our resting place for the next two weeks was to be the Emeraude Attitude Resort. Emeraude is a small, almost boutique style hotel, close to the beach in Belle Mare. It has approximately 60 bedrooms and as a result has a pleasant cozy feeling about it?. We'd arrived at about 8.00 a.m. and were given a friendly welcome. Indeed we were invited to haveb breakfast before we even signed oin and them after a very straightforward and hassle-free sign in were given access to a changing room so we could change into more appropriate clothing to enjoy the sun until our room was ready. They apologised profusely that the room would not be ready until after lunch as they were full to capacity and the cur...Read More

Aventura sea bed walking

So who would have thought that we'd even think about walking on the sea bed? Well in Mauritius you can 'volunteer' to descend down a ladder with 4 metres of sea water above you and a 'gold fish bowl' on your head. Even my wife, who is not a great lover of water was determined to give it a go. Indeed to psych herself up for the experience she had told several of her friends that she was going to do it - with the principle that the more she told the less likely it was that she'd opt out. The tour company representative had spoken to us about the available trips on the island and we had chosen to opt for the sea bed walking early on in the holiday. Making sure that we didn't have time to pot...Read More
