Originally I had envisioned this road trip being a "day trip" up and back but as I started adding things to my itinerary, it was clear that an overnight would make the trip more enjoyable. I am really glad that I made that decision and was able to find a hotel at a decent rate in the height of their fall season. The center of the Door County Peninsula is about 180 miles from Milwaukee and estimated to be about three and a half hours drive time, with no stops. I of course, have to stop whenever something catches my eye (like the beautiful barn quilt facing Hwy 57 a few miles south of Renard's Cheese). I have written about it here in this journal, but the Sturgeon Bay USCG Station and the ...Read More

When I was visiting Door County this past summer, I had wanted to tour the Cana Island Lighthouse & Museum, but simply ran out of time. I was glad that I was able to plan for a fall trip to the area, which would provide ample time to spend some time there. The Cana Island Lighthouse and the grounds surrounding it, are now owned and maintained by the Door County Maritime Museum. As one of three locations of the maritime museum, visitors gain a different perspective since the focus here is the lighthouse and the life as a lighthouse keeper. Built in 1869 of cream colored bricks, today the lighthouse has a steel white exterior due to weather damage incurred in the late 19th century. The...Read More

The Eagle Bluff Lighthouse is located inside the Peninsula State Park in Door County, WI. Built in 1868, it is in very exceptional condition thanks in large measure to the local efforts of the Door County Historical Society. They began their restoration work in 1960, nearly 35 years after its last resident lightkeeper resided at the lighthouse. The lighthouse, keeper's quarters and supporting buildings were built out of Milwaukee cream bricks which have withstood many years of coastal weather. Today visitors can take a tour inside the keeper's residence and take a climb up the narrow iron spiral staircase into the light tower. The docent led tour begins out on the grounds, wit...Read More

Sturgeon Bay Ship Canal & Lighthouse

Sturgeon Bay is a port town on Lake Michigan in Door County, Wisconsin. With heavy ship traffic into the harbor, it became necessary to build a navigational light at the entrance to the ship canal. The pierhead light was built in 1881 but was soon deemed inadequate and a subsequent coastal lighthouse was built on shore in 1898, some eight years after a recommendation to the US Congress by the Lighthouse Board.Today visitors can venture down to the mouth of the ship canal to see the three lights that protect the shore as ships enter the canal. The lighthouse itself sits on an active US Coast Guard installation and is not directly accessible to visitors. If you are planning to ...Read More

Having done the "Death's Door and Island Lighthouse" tour with the Shoreline Charter out of Gill's Rock, I planned to return for a fall tour with their Sister Bay location to check out the fall foliage from the water. They offer two tours, both 90 minutes in length. One heads north out of Sister Bay and focuses largely on the beautiful homes along the coastline. The other goes south and features the islands in the bay as well as the Eagle Bluff Lighthouse in Peninsula State Park. Each of them provides a wonderful view of the limestone bluffs that are unique to Door County's bay side. Unable to decide which one to do, I did both! For both of the tours Capt. Gaydean and narrator Mike wer...Read More

As they say in real estate . . . location, location, location. The Beachfront Inn is located right on the sandy lakefront of Lake Michigan on what they affectionately call "the lake side" of the Door County Peninsula. When i decided it would be best to do an overnight for my most recent road trip to Door County, I decided to give the recently featured location on the reality TV show "Hotel Impossible." The premise of the Travel Channel's hit show is that hotel expert and show host Anthony Melchiorri comes in to help struggling hotel operators turn things around. Having just seen the show the week before, I was happy to have the opportunity to stay at this primo location. The Beachfront ...Read More

Since I would be getting home to Milwaukee a bit late for supper, it was suggested I have a late lunch so the Shipwrecked seemed to fit the bill as I was heading home from Door County. They are a decent micro-brew that serves a pub food style menu. I thought that by arriving around 1:30pm I would be past the lunch hour, but the place was slammed with people. The fact of the matter was that while I was there on a Tuesday afternoon, the weather was unseasonably warm and the number of visitors throughout Door County seemed high. It should have been no surprise that the outdoor patio seating would be full. Inside, the bar area was about half full which was where I ended up taking a seat.I...Read More

Having done my first ever fish boil earlier this summer, I wanted to try out another one on this trip especially since I had turned my trip into an overnight stay. The Viking Grill is credited as being the "founder" of the Door County fish boil. Located in Ellison Bay, the Viking has been serving up boiled whitefish since 1961. The "boil master" (a term I just made up but heck, maybe it is his real title for all I know) told me that all Door County fish boils use the same recipe with perhaps a minor variation here or there. The main gist of the fish boil is that the red potatoes go in first for about 10 minutes, followed by whole sweet onions for five. After that, the stainless steel co...Read More
