GARRISON CHURCH OF ST PETER AND ST PAUL (JESUIT CHURCH)From the outside this is a fairly unremarkable church, as it is in a busy, central part, not far from the main square (Rynok) surrounded by other buildings, and does not seem to be as imposing as some (the Latin Cathedral for example) or ornate as others (St Andrew’s Church). Admittedly when we went, it was a holy day so just seemed very busy outside (and in) so we didn’t really take it in. The church was built in the early seventeenth century, and was for the Jesuit order. At some point in the eighteenth century, it stopped being Jesuit and became a garrison church, before returning to the Jesuit order some 50 years later (...Read More

Latin Cathedral

Quote:
The Latin Cathedral (or Archcathedral Basilica of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary if you prefer) is the largest Roman Catholic cathedral in Lviv, Ukraine. In Lviv they are also referred to as Polish Catholics, possibly because the region was under Polish rule for many years. It is situated on Katedralna Square (Cathedral Square) in the heart of the Old Town. The church was built in the 14th century in the Gothic style, and has been restored recently, with plaster work as it looks very new and clinical. Compared to a lot of buildings in the city, it’s more simplistic structural style, makes it look fairly unremarkable. There has been many legends surrounding it, such as cannonballs from ...Read More

ST ANDREWS CHURCH (FORMERLY BERNADINE CHURCH)This church was close to our hotel, in the Old Quarter of the picturesque Ukrainian city of Lviv. To be honest, outside I wasn’t that impressed, but when our guide showed us some photos of the inside of the church I was keen to see more. The day we were there was a religious festival, so there were services going on and many people were standing outside listening, so I returned later in the day to see the inside. The Ukrainians are very devout, so services can occur four or five times a day. The church is of the Ukrainian Greek Orthodox Catholic denomination, which is the largest Catholic Church order after Roman Catholics. I am not c...Read More

Pid Klepsydroju is a café-restaurant near the art gallery (I think it is upstairs) in Lviv’s old town. I stopped here for lunch one sunny Monday with some friends. It is situated on Vimenska Street, close to the junction with Fedorova Street. This area appears to be all pedestrianised. We ate outside under the umbrellas, and if I am honest, this wasn’t where we had planned to eat. We had been attracted by the pizzas in the café next door but accidentally wandered too far and ended up here, in the adjacent café’s area – Pid Klepsydroju which seems to have various similar spellings. If this place has a gimmick, it is their menu, which is designed like a newspaper. There is a lot of tex...Read More

I stayed at this hotel for two nights in August 2013. The hotel was chosen by my tour operator and included in the price of my trip. The hotel has a variety of standards of rooms from suites to tourist rooms with shared facilities. I would guess my room was either economy or standard class. It was a twin room with two narrow single beds with a single pillow, sheet and bedspread each, wardrobe (with bathrobes and slippers), desk and TV (BBC New 24 being only English language channel). The bathroom contained only a shower, with a WC and sink and the usual free toiletries. I was happy with the cleanliness standard of the hotel in both the room and the public areas. There is free wi-fi in the hote...Read More
