Quote: Our trip to the Black Hills took us to the famous Mount Rushmore and the still being built Crazy Horse Memorial. We drove up to Sturgis and Deadwood to experience the Wild West. Then onto Custer State Park to mingle with the buffaloes.

There is so much to see in the Black Hills that we could have used another day or two. While we made sure to visit all of our must see destinations, we tried to sneak in a few extra places along the way. A few of those places turned out to be very fun and interesting and it was a shame that we couldn’t spend more time there. My family and my wife’s sister’s family took our first vacation together. My brother-in-law and nephew are avid Harley-Davidson enthusiasts. They try to visit every Harley-Davidson store as each one sells poker chips that have the store’s location printed on them. Many Harley-Davidson fans collect these chips to frame. Our quest to collect poker chips took us to...Read More

After visiting Mount Rushmore and a quick lunch in Keystone, we headed towards Custer State Park. A mile outside of town on the way toward Mount Rushmore, Highway 16A heads south toward Custer State Park. Most of the road is known as the Iron Mountain Road and it is the only scenic highway within Custer State Park which does not require an entrance fee. The road twists and turns for about eighteen miles where it eventually meets its parent road, Highway 16. Iron Mountain Road is one of the most scenic drives in the Black Hills. The road is famous for its "pigtail" bridges in which the road loops back towards itself which allows drivers to change elevation quickly. The corkscrew design was needed...Read More

When the Black Hills of South Dakota was chosen for the construction of Mount Rushmore, it stirred up controversy among the Lakota Indians. The Lakota tribe believed that the United States seized the land from them. Ever since Mount Rushmore was constructed, there have been protests and occupations of the site among the Lakota Indians. Henry Standing Bear, a Lakota elder, approached Korczak Ziolkowski, who helped sculpt Mount Rushmore, in order to construct a memorial for the Lakota Indians. The plan was to carve a memorial of Crazy Horse, a Lakota war leader, into the Black Hills, less than twenty miles away from Mount Rushmore. The memorial would have Crazy Horse on a horse with his arm outstr...Read More

We left Mitchell, SD, and headed out on I-90 for Rapid City. When my family travels, we enjoy visiting state capitols. So it was only natural that we deviated from our route to visit Pierre, the state capital of South Dakota. Pierre sits directly in the middle of the state and it was so chosen to be the state capital because of its central location. About an hour and forty-five minutes west of Mitchell, US Highway 83 heads north from I-90 toward Pierre. The capital lies about 35 miles north of the interstate. Pierre is unique in that it seems to only exist because of its role as the seat of state government. It is the second least populous state capital, after Montpelier, Vermont. It seems as ...Read More

Mount Rushmore has always been something that has fascinated me since I was a small child. It took thirty-four years before I was able to gaze in wonderment at the sculpture that has come to symbolize the United States. By the time of my visit, I was married and had three children of my own. My oldest child was five and as he gazed upon the faces on the mountain, the look on his face was priceless. My first visit to Mount Rushmore was more memorable because it was experienced with my family. We headed up to Mount Rushmore from Rapid City on Highway 16. The highway intersects with Highway 16A, a scenic highway that leads to the base of Mount Rushmore. The road twists and winds around t...Read More
