Lonaconing Silk Mill, also known as the Klotz Throwing Company, is located in Lonaconing, MD. It was the last intact silk mill in the US, and was open from 1907 – 1957. The workers went on strike over their working conditions, and when they returned to work, they were told that the mill was closing.
Please do not try and visit without an invitation! This place may be abandoned, but it is under video surveillance at all times. I was lucky enough to be invited for a photography workshop. It is a fairly small building, with 2 floors and a basement. The machinery is still there, along with things left behind by the workers. A great experience!
