DO Milwaukee is the common name for the annual event "Doors Open Milwaukee" promoting many of our city's most well known landmarks and historical buildings. Organized and hosted by the nonprofit organization Historic Milwaukee, Inc. (HMI), the purpose of this weekend event is to promote the rich history of Milwaukee as told through the buildings found throughout the city. The 2013 event was held on September 21 & 22, featuring nearly 125 schools, churches, government and public service buildings, hotels, restaurants and office buildings. Of those on the list, I have personally been to just 22, making my "to DO" list a challenge given I only had one day and approximately six hours to s...Read More

The congregation of St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church first assembled in 1848. With the growing German immigrant population, the church experienced growth enough to support the building of one of the finest examples of Victorian Gothic style architecture found in the United States.Built of Milwaukee's famed cream bricks in 1889, the two spires can be seen from many points throughout the city. I have stopped by on several occasions to take photos of the exterior, but never finding the building unlocked to visitors. With the DO Milwaukee event, however, folks were encouraged to come take a look at this treasure of our city's German heritage. When I entered through the exp...Read More

Pabst Blue Ribbon and the Pabst Brewery were synonymous with Milwaukee. After more than 150 years of brewing history, the Pabst Brewery in Milwaukee was shut down for good in 1996. The 25 buildings were left abandoned for many years, until a couple of real estate developers stepped in to bring life back to the four blocks that previously were the Pabst Brewery. Today two of these buildings have been completely renovated into the Brewhouse Inn & Suites. In addition to the original brewhouse, the neighboring mill house has been redeveloped for this project.Since opening earlier this summer, I've wanted to check out the interior of this new 90 suite hotel. With Doors Open Milwaukee, ...Read More

Attraction | "Milwaukee's Ornate and Intricate "Taj Mahal""

Another one of Milwaukee's landmark buildings, I have driven past the Tripoli Shrine Center dozens of times and always wondered what went on inside and who were their members. To be honest, I naively thought it was a religious center of some sort. I suppose I had judged "this book by its cover" since it is a replica of India's marble domed mausoleum the Taj Mahal.Visitors are directed to enter the building from the side, east entrance the main front doors were locked. As I walked through the doorway and up the small half flight of steps, the lovely tile mosaic walls and floors could be seen all around. Walking further up the next full flight of stairs, it was almost dizzying along the...Read More

In addition to the three locations I've written individual reviews/stories on, I also made very brief visits at three others participating in the Doors Open (DO) Milwaukee event. With around 125 locations throughout the City of Milwaukee, it was impossible to see more than just a handful of buildings that participated in this wonderful weekend open house. These three locations really were not enough to write a full feature on, so I've lumped them in together here in this story.Brenner's Brewery was a bit of a strange place to be included in DO Milwaukee, as most of the participating sites focus on Milwaukee's past. This one, however, is about the revitalization and future of t...Read More
