Ljubljana Walking Tour

Story/Tip

Ljubljana Castle Photo, Ljubljana, Slovenia
Quote:
Ljubljana, the capitol of Slovenia, is a very pedestrian-friendly city, so what better way to learn about the city than through a walking tour? Walking tours of the central city depart every morning from in front of the old town hall in the city center. The center of Ljubljana is a very pleasant city on a lot of levels. From baroque churches to art nouveau buildings, there's interesting architecture all around. The Ljubljanica River winds through the downtown, and it's lined with dozens of restaurants to choose from, and is crossed by some interesting bridges. After assembling by the stone Rossa Fountain of Three Rivers and seeing the town hall, our tour made a stop at St. Nicholas...Read More

Attraction | "Scenic Castle Built into Cliffside"

Predjama Castle Photo, Postojna, Slovenia
Quote:
Predjama castle has about everything a tourist could want from a medieval castle: awesome setting, colorful historical resident, and remaining or restored well enough to visit and get an idea of how it was hundreds of years ago. The dramatic cliffside setting of Predjama also has a few other interesting extras, such as an connected cave that I'll discuss shortly, and a jousting field out front. The castle dates to the 13th century, but its current form was rebuilt in the 16th century. It is hidden away in a valley of the karst region of Slovenia, so you don't even catch a glimpse of it as you're approaching on the road until you're right on top of it. That secluded location and its for...Read More

Attraction | "The Cave with the Train In It"

Postojna Caves Photo, Postojna, Slovenia
Quote:
Postojna is an immense cave complex, so big that you take an underground train for 2 km to get to the parts that you tour. Whizzing though the tunnels on the little train was a blast and you really get the feeling that you're headed deep into the Earth. (Also, I couldn't help but wanting to sing"Hi Ho! Hi Ho!" from thinking of going into the seven dwarf's mine for some reason.) After disembarking from the train, they split the visitors into groups by language. Even after this division, you'll still probably be with a pretty sizable group due to the number of visitors they serve. The foot tour gets started from an area called the Great Mountain, and you will walk through about 1 km of the cave's 21...Read More

Attraction | "Gorgeous Lake Bled and the Church of the Assumption"

Lake Bled Photo, Lake Bled, Slovenia
Quote:
Stunning images of Lake Bled and the pretty Church of the Assumption on the island in the middle of the lake are what inspired us to include Slovenia on our trip. The lake, island, and church are all beautiful in person. The resort town on Lake Bled is a busy place in summer with a variety of restaurants and activities, where you can stay active or just enjoy the scenic lake. Don't be too dismayed by the number of cars coming into town. Once you find a parking spot and get on foot, Bled does a nice job of absorbing the tourists and we didn't feel like it was over crowded. One of the "must-do's" of Lake Bled is taking a boat out to the island which hold the Church of the Assumption. Attraction | "1000+ year old Bled Castle"

Bled Castle Photo, Lake Bled, Slovenia
Quote:
Overlooking picturesque Lake Bled, Bled Castle is a wonderful small castle to visit. It sits on top of a 100 meter high cliff, so you can see it from anywhere around the lake. We were lucky enough to snag a parking spot in the small lot up beside the castle, but if you don't have a car, you can walk or take a horse-drawn carriage up to the top. The castle in one form or another has been perched up there for over 1000 years, so you can soak up a lot of history during a visit. Some parts of the buildings have been turned over to modern uses (a cafe and gift shops), but you can still see ancient frescoes decorating the former chapel. A large part of the castle is a historical, anthropological, geogr...Read More

Attraction | "Beautiful Walk Through Vintgar Gorge"

Vintgar Gorge Photo, Lake Bled, Slovenia
Quote:
Vintgar Gorge is another amazing bit of nature near the stunningly scenic Lake Bled. Just a 5 minute drive from Lake Bled, the gorge features an easy hike through the narrow valley of the Radovna River. The walk is not strenuous at all, on a mostly level trail, incorporating wooden walkways fixed to the side of the cliffs and occasionally crossing over the stream and back. Along the shady pathway, the stream goes through several small cascades and rapids and forms the occasional deeper collecting pool before bubbling along. Near the end, there's a bigger pool collected behind an old dam, and then a bit further downstream, a funnel of a 26 meter high waterfall forms the pretty finale.The...Read More

Attraction | "Cable Car Overlooking Lake Bohinj"

Vogel Ski Center Photo, Bohinj, Slovenia
Quote:
Lake Bohinj is a beautiful Slovenian alpine lake, only about a half hour's drive from the its more famous neighbor, Lake Bled. Scenic Lake Bohinj, surrounded by the peaks of the Julian Alps, is considerably larger than Lake Bled, and a visit to Bohinj offers a very different experience compared to Bled. Bohinj (the 'j' is silent in the pronunciation) is less touristy, less crowded, more natural and rustic. It's not encircled by hotels and villas like Bled, but we saw lots of camping spots and you come here to enjoy nature, rather than historical castles and churches.Surrounded by all these mountains, there must be skiing, right? However, we were visiting in August, so no skiing. But fe...Read More

Attraction | "Spend a Day in Skofja Loka"

Loka Castle Photo, Skofja Loka, Slovenia
Quote:
Wanting to see another piece of Slovenia on our whirlwind tour, we asked for ideas for nearby day trips from the Ljubljana tourist information office. On their recommendation, we drove out to Skofja Loka. It's a very short trip from Ljubljana, only about a half hour's drive from downtown to Skofja Loka. It turned out to be a great choice for a place to spend part of a day. Skofja Loka is small city with an ancient core, easily enjoyed on foot once you get there. After a short stop at Skofja Loka's very helpful tourist information office, we knew where to park (outside the center), and had some basic information and walking guidemaps to the town. The highlight of the town is Loka Castl...Read More
