We decided to visit the Natural Bridge Zoo as we passed it getting to the Natural Bridge itself. We weren’t sure whether to or not, but thought as we were in the area we would. You pay $12 for a ticket and can buy a bag of animal feed for either $2.50 or $5. We chose the larger and there was quite a lot of feed included. Once we wandered into the zoo and saw the first exhibits, we knew we were not going to like what we saw. The cages were very small and the animals looked stressed and depressed. They have two young tiger cubs that at weekends you can pay to have your photo taken with. As we visited in the week they were in their cage. One, the white one, was pacing u...Read More

Last time we visited this area in June we didn’t have time to visit the Natural Bridge so made sure we did so this time. To be honest we were not expecting too much – a large rock with a hole in it, but…After you get your ticket you have to descent to the entrance to the Natural Bridge itself and the Cedar Creek Nature Trail that runs alongside the river. You can either take the 137 steps, which we did, or they run a shuttle bus which leaves at regular intervals. The steps sound daunting, but they really are not. They run alongside a very pretty stream and there are several stop off points where benches are if you need to take a rest. It really is worth taking this route if you...Read More

Natural Bridge Butterflies

Attraction | "Butterflies at Natural Bridge"

Natural Bridge Butterflies Photo, Harrisonburg, Virginia
Quote:
As part of your general admission ticket you gain entry to the Butterfly garden. You enter a room where there are free-flying butterflies and you have to watch where you are treading as they are on the floor too. I thought that this room led to another as it is pretty small, but this is the only room.

There are some pretty butterflies about, but there did not seem to be many varieties and many were hurt or damaged, some were dead. Having been to Niagara Falls Butterfly Conservatory, which is brilliant and huge, this one pales into insignificance.

It is very hot and humid in the room, so be aware of this.

Whilst we were visiting the Natural Bridge we passed Foamhenge. We had read about this before travelling and so decided to pay it a visit as we were passing. The parking area is a field and you have to walk across this field to get to another where Foamhenge is located. We visited when it was hot and dry, but if there had been rain I can imagine it would be a bit tricky. There is lots of red soil about which would be very muddy when wet and very slippery. You have to go up a sleep lope to get to the stones and slippery mud and grass would not be ideal. When you get to Foamhenge you will see a full-size replica of the famous Stonehenge in England. It has been here since 2004 and ...Read More

Meems Bottom Covered Bridge

Attraction | "Pretty covered bridge"

When I was looking through some area brochures I saw mention of a covered bridge nearby. Having seen many in the New England area we decided to pay it a visit.

Meems Bottom Covered Bridge is the longest covered bridge in Virginia at 204 feet. The bridge has been rebuilt four times since it was first erected in 1867.

The bridge has a very interesting build design when viewed internally. The lines of the structure are very interesting and is a good place for photographers. Externally it is less appealing, but the area is very pretty with the river etc.

This is well worth a visit if you are in the area.

Staunton Mall

Attraction | "The world's most depressing mall!"

Quote:
We decided to drive to the neighboring city of Staunton as we had been advised to visit their shopping mall by a hotel employee. It is about 3 miles from Harrisonburg and can be reached via the I81 or Route 11. At first we could not find the mall as the cars navigation did not seem to want to find it. However, after searching for a specific shop it did find it and we pulled into a large parking area in front of a large indoor mall. All looked promising as it look quite large so we went in. Oh my, it was deserted. There wasn't a soul in sight. Many of the shops were empty so we though maybe we had entered in a section that was yet to be occupied. The further into the mall we walk...Read More

This hotel is a little off the beaten track and might be hard to find. We put the address in the cars navigation and found it. But it is ten minutes or so off I81 and round the back of a commercial area and down the end of a lane. We got to the hotel late evening and were greeted by a pleasant young lady on the front desk. We took our stuff up to our room then I went back down to get coffee and snacks to se us through till morning.I went downstairs and looked for the snack shop, but could not find it. I asked the woman on the desk where it was and she said they did not have one at this location. So I asked her where the food vending machines were and she explained they only had...Read More

We previously visited Harrisonburg in June this year and loved the area so much we decided to return. This time we stayed at a different hotel for 7 nights. We arrived just after the official check in time of 3pm, so was not surprised that our room was not quite ready. The two front desk staff on duty then went onto a huge debate on how best to handle the situation. After listening to them for several minutes we just suggested we come back in an hour. This did not seem to have occurred to them, but they agreed. When we returned our room was ready. Staff should not bicker in front of guests! On our second day we returned to our room to find all our drawers, including bedside cabi...Read More
