We left the hotel at 9 o’clock. Even though our hotel was 7 miles/10 km from Gangtok, the journey into the city was arduous and all up hill. It took more than half an hour to get to our first destination - The Directorate of Handicrafts and Handloom, a government craft centre, museum and shop. You may also see this described as the ‘Government Institute of Cottage Industries’ or GICI. The centre is located about one kilometer from the top end of the main market area and was founded in 1957 with the mission of promoting local handicraft skills. We arrived too early as the place doesn’t open until ten so we invited our driver, Bassang, to join us for a cup of tea, and I got to watch some loc...Read More

We spent several days in Darjeeling a few years ago and we thought we’d done pretty much all the city’s attractions. When our driver offered to take us sightseeing, we were fairly sure we’d seen almost all there was to see but he – probably realising we’d not had transport the first time – suggested taking us to the Tibetan Refugees Self-Help Centre. He guess right and this was something we’d not previously visited. It’s quite a long drive to get to the centre and I’m sure that’s why we’d not bothered before. You need to really want to go to this place as you drive out of the city, into the countryside and then up a very steep, very rough road. Unfortunately the weather was pretty lo...Read More

I wasn’t particularly looking forward to the National Institute of Tibetology. I had in my mind the memory of a visit to the National Library in Bhutan which was quite possibly the dullest so-called attraction I’ve ever visited. It was filled with old religious scripts. That was the sort of thing I was expecting but it wasn’t at all what we found. After paying 10 Rs each (approximately 10 pence), we received a ticket in the form of a postcard. I rather like that approach to ticketing as you get a nice little souvenir rather than just a ticket stub. The building is beautiful (blah blah blah) and it stands in gardens filled with shrubs and enormous butterflies. We sat for a while just w...Read More

The typical Indian museum is often a nice old building, perhaps a palace, perhaps a place left empty when the nasty old Brits headed for home in 1947 or sometimes it’s a purpose built museum building thrown up (sometimes rather too literally) after Independence. Typically the contents and layout will owe a lot to the standard design of a British Victorian era museum with very well-meaning and educational exhibits, lots of dust, and some rather decrepit exhibits. Often some worthy but not very good local artists show their odd paintings, there are dolls dressed in traditional clothing of the various regions, maybe old coins and stamps, loads of carved and cast gods and Buddhas and some very nice but ra...Read More

A lot of Indian museums are hard to describe as much more than a bit rubbish and the Himachal State Museum Shimla is not exactly world class. I’ve been going to India for nearly two decades so I know what to expect and I've learned to love and celebrate museum mediocrity. Anyone can be impressed by state of the art multi-media displays and interactive exhibits but that’s so much less of a challenge than amusing yourself in a museum that could have been collated by the school librarian. I am guilty as charged for the sin of ridicule but I still keep hunting down local museums and enjoying them.HSMS is not a place you can stumble across by accident because it’s not actually in the city.
