I’m getting to an age where I like flower shows, and one of the daddies of them all is Hampton Court Flower Show, held every summer just outside West London. As we had randomly chosen the weekend it was being held on a London weekend, we decided that we had to break our duck and visit the place. As this is London, we decided to take public transport and after getting to Waterloo sat on the packed Hampton Court train. We were particularly lucky to arrive about 20 minutes early meaning we could nab a seat on the waiting train. The carriages soon filled. On the way I could but help reflect that the train was full of menopausal women struggling in the early morning summer London he...Read More

Attraction | "From Hampton Court to Westminster in three lazy hours"

Cruise on the River Thames Photo, London, England
Quote:
After our hot and sticky day at Hampton Court Flower Show, we wandered back towards Hampton village and past a pier with a tourist boat attached waiting to cast away. A simple enquiry led to the discovery that for £15 we could gently float down the river in the afternoon sun from Hampton through to central Westminster in a lazy 3 hours. Given that our train trip to Hampton Court had been packed and hot so we were not looking forward to the return trip, and that the tour operators confirmed there was a bar on board, the deal was quickly snaffled up. We have often done the boat trip from Greenwich to Westminster and we were rather surprised at how different the corresponding trip into ...Read More

Attraction | "Nice stylish pub in posh Kensington"

Builders' Arms Photo, London, England

I’ve frequented many pubs and bars in my days (as my regular posts to Igougo attest) but one of the most casually posh pubs I’ve visited is the Builders Arms in South Kensington. I was told that the recently departed Sir David Frost lived just down the road from here, and I can imagine many a millionaire living in these very nice but understated town houses in this part of London. The pub is located in a nice Georgian Town House, and the inside is done out in a relaxed and casual, but very tidy style. It’s a place to feel very comfortable. We were quite lucky to find a table on the sunny Sunday afternoon that we visited the place, although the outside space was not surprisingly fully utili...Read More

Megaro Hotel Restaurant and Bar

Restaurant | "Excellent London Hotel"

Megaro Hotel Restaurant and Bar Photo, London, England

As our £20 bargain hotel deal only lasted two nights, we had to decamp across the city to the Megaro Hotel for our final night. The hotel is literally across the road from Kings Cross train station which is London’s hub station for most travellers to London from the North. At first sight the hotel looked a bit like a squat; it has some really tasteless brightly coloured graffiti painted down the outside of the classic stone exterior. Actually like some graffiti so I’m not just being a miserable old goat; in a word "Ugly".Fortunately, the inside is much better although the lobby area looks a bit like an afterthought down a long corridor and the desk under the stairs. I guess in ...Read More

Kings Cross Station

Attraction | "Kings Cross Train Station: Much Improved"

Kings Cross Station Photo, London, England
Quote:
I always used to enter London from the North of England with some trepidation, as Kings Cross Train Station used to be a large but dark and run down shed of a station in a dark and run down part of London. I was always happy when I had wandered as far as Russell Square on my way into Central London as there were no longer any spotty young rent boys loitering on street corners winking at me. Today the area although hardly the best in London is definitely on an upswing, and the new facelift given to Kings Cross Train Station has completely altered the look (and most importantly) feel of the place. Kings Cross Station was originally built in 1852, on the site of a former Smallpox hospi...Read More
