This Palace is the site of the crowning of the Scottish kings in the past and although the Stone of Scone or Stone of Destiny was stolen and lay in Westminster for many years and is now in Edinburgh castle there are two replicas in this palace. One is under the original throne used for the coronations inside the palace and the other stands on the sites where the kings of the Scots and head Scottish Parliaments were enthroned. The replica stone stands on the mound near the chapel or mausoleum. The mound is supposed to have been created by the lords carrying earth in their boots. After wearing loyalty to their king on their own land they then emptied their boots and all this soil create...Read More

The Cairngorm reindeerWe visited these beautiful creatures one year when it was snowing really quite heavily. We stayed at Boat of Garten and drove to the sanctuary which is not far from Aviemore, the ski centre of Scotland.Initially we were in two minds as to whether to make the effort as it really was very snowy and driving was tricky on the roads but then we thought that snow is the best sort of weather to see reindeer after all and so off we went. This is the UK's only reindeer herd and they are allowed to roam feely in their natural habitat. Reindeer were native but had become extinct in Scotland . They were re introduced in 1952 by a Swedish Reindeer Herder. Th...Read More

The Loch Ness Centre and ExhibitionDrumnadrochitSATNAV IV63 6XPWe decided to make the pilgrimage up to the big loch and see if we could find Nessie where so many others had failed. We stopped to take a boat trip on the loch first and then made our way along the north shore to Drumnadrochit to this award winning centre. If , like us you are driving from Inverness along the A82 this centre is hard to miss as it is on the right as you enter Drumnadrochit in an imposing grey stone building next to the modern Drumnadrochit hotel. This attraction has won many awards including ‘Best Visitor experience’ from the Highlands and Islands Tourism Awards in 2011 – 201...Read More

Highland SafarisAberfeldy, PerthshireScotlandThis centre offers so many activities from 4x4 trips into the mountains, cycle hire and tour suggestions, a drop off at top cycle down a mountain, hiring a gilly for fishing, and on the actual site they have a Red deer feeding experience daily at 12.20pm, gold panning for kids and a play ground with bouncy castle and small ride on cars in an area of hard gravel as well a a discovery garden with pond dipping and a bird hide as well as min beast hunting. We went for the Red deer feeding experience as I wanted to do this. My husband was less enthusiastic as he hates seeing animals kept in captivity but these deer seemed pretty content with th...Read More

Kenmore and Loch TayIn this lovely little village of Kenmore is a conservation village with all the houses beautifully kept and painted white and black. The village is nestled at the base of Drummind Hill At the end of Loch TAy with a lovely little harbor. It is here that the Loch Tay passes under a single lane 18th century stone bridge to become the River Tay, Scotland’s longest river. In the centre of the village you will find the Kenmore Hotel which is Scotland’s oldest inn and was built in 1572. The Inn like the houses around is painted white with black trim. In the restaurant at the back you can enjoy a great view of the river through huge windows. It is a popular place fo...Read More

Attraction | "Learn about Iron Age on the Loch"

The Scottish Crannog Centre Photo, Perthshire, Scotland
Quote:
The centre for Scottish Crannogs we discovered when doing research for our recent trip is on Loch Tay just near where we were staying so that was very handy for us.A Crannog is an Iron Age settlement or house on a very small island close to the shores of a Loch. Today they look like tiny islands with a clump of trees growing on them. In Loch Tay alone they have found eighteen of these Crannogs. The reason Loch Tay is the centre for Crannogs is that one particular Crannog has been studied and investigated thoroughly using divers and bringing artifacts to the surface in order to learn about Crannogs. They have used this information to recreate the Crannog which is a major part of the ...Read More

The Highland Chocolatier – Scottish Chocolate CentreGrandtully near AberfeldyWe went to the Grandtully shop in time for our morning coffee and I was rather hoping to see the great man in action but I think maybe Saturday is not the day to see him working. You can book guided tours which do include tastings but these must be booked in advance and there is a cost but they don’t say how much.We went straight into the café for our drink and found a nice little round table in the corner by a mock fireplace with a puppet witch on a broom stick flying out towards us. The menu was in a chocolate brown textured cover and on the very first page I had at least five different h...Read More

Attraction | "Scotland's Smallest distillery"

Edradour Distillery Photo, Pitlochry, Scotland
Quote:
This distillery is in a very small village that you can only get to by a single lane road but has become famous because it is Scotland’s smallest distillery. The setting is beautiful as it nestles in a small glen beside a running stream with a little bridge. The buildings are all brightly painted in white and it looks like a little model village building it is so perfect. As you walk up towards the distillery the shop is where you come to first and here you are met by a gentleman in a blue tweed kilt who asks if you would like to go on the tour. If you are interested in the tour it is £7.50 per person and you get to taste at the end from a choice of sixty whiskies. We chose not ...Read More
