Quote: We started our summer trip to Europe with a stay in Dubrovnik. It's a beautiful old city enclosed by massive, fortified stone walls that you can circle the city on by foot. We enjoyed side excursions to Montenegro, Medjugorge, and the nearby island of Lokrum.

The ancient fortified walls surrounding the old town of Dubrovnik are the city's most obvious attraction. Don't worry, you can not miss them as you have to enter through one of the three primary city gates or through the harbor entrance. The current form of the walls dates back to the 1400s when existing fortifications were improved in response to the nearby expanding Turkish empire. But Dubrovnik has had fortifications dating back many centuries before that and the 1400s construction just expanded upon earlier existing walls. These 600+ year old walls did their job admirably over the centuries, detering potential invaders up until the city surrendered to Napolean in 1806. Despite bombardment dur...Read More

Attraction | "Day Trip to Lokrum Island from Dubrovnik"

If you want to visit at least one of the Adriatic islands, but don't have days to spend hopping from one to another, then Lokrum is the place for you. Just a very short 15 minute ferry ride from Dubrovnik's old-town harbor, Lokrum is a nice change of pace from Dubrovnik. It offers a nice mix of shady hiking, swimming, history, and nature. During the summer Dubrovnik festival, there is also a stage on Lokrum for performances of plays or music. From the minute we left the ferry, our visit was accompanied by the very loud humming of cicadas in the trees covering the island. There are a couple of historical sites on the island. There are some ruins of a monastery dating back to 1023 (but mo...Read More

If you want to get close-up views of Dubrovnik's imposing walls from the sea, watch kids jump into the ocean from the rocks along the walls, explore the shoreline of Lokrum Island, and more, then rent a sea kayak. We rented sea kayaks at Banje Beach, which is just outside the Ploce Gate of the old town. As beaches go, Banje is sort of small and mostly rocky, but its location right next to old town is tops, and on a broiling hot August day, the water of the Adriatic feels great. We hired sea kayaks at the Banje Beach rental hut, life jacket included. From the beach launch, we first headed alongside the nearby old-town harbor. There isn't too much boat traffic. The occasional Lokrum fe...Read More

In Dubrovnik, you'll find the best selection of room choices, and the best value, if you rent a private apartment, or sobe. There are several listings of apartments in Dubrovnik available online. For a high-season stay, we were finding regular hotels to be extremely expensive, but the apartment listings showed a variety of choices for around 100 euros, give or take 25 euros depending on the place. In general, the apartments offer a lot more space than a standard hotel room for half the cost or better, plus you will have a kitchen so you don't have to eat out every meal if you don't want to. A possible downside for potential apartment renters: you're much more on your own without a concierge or 24 ...Read More

This is a nice little pizzeria that offers a tasty variety of pizzas on their menu. It's relatively inexpensive with pizzas big enough to split one between two people. The pizzas tasted great and really hit the spot. They have other things on the menu, of course, and they looked good, but we stuck we the pizza. The location of Domenica was a real plus. It's in the pedestrian only zone of the old city, not on a major thoroughfare, but a quieter, but still lively, side street. Its al fresco tables are on a street wide enough that there is some ventilation. This is actually a key element for recommendation here, because in the heat of August, we did eat at other places where it was too tig...Read More
